Defense Department Probes Microsoft Over Chinese Engineers

The U.S. Department of Defense is now investigating Microsoft for hiring engineers linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to work on sensitive military cloud systems. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced the full investigation after learning about a program called “Digital Escorts,” which began during the Obama-Biden years. This program allowed Chinese nationals, working under the supervision of Americans, to help build and manage cloud systems used by the Pentagon.

The “Digital Escorts” program was meant to meet U.S. contracting rules by using American citizens as go-betweens. These Americans had security clearance but often lacked deep technical knowledge. Chinese engineers would do the technical work, while the Americans would serve as their point of contact. In theory, this setup was supposed to keep national security safe. In practice, it gave foreign nationals access to some of the most sensitive parts of America’s defense systems.

Secretary Hegseth said this setup created serious risks. He called it a “breach of trust” and said it never should have been allowed. As a result, the Department of Defense has now issued a formal warning to Microsoft. The company must now submit to an outside audit to look at every line of code written by Chinese engineers involved in the program. The audit will be done by a third party and will not cost taxpayers anything.

This investigation goes beyond Microsoft. Hegseth also ordered all military software vendors to review their systems for any Chinese involvement and to remove it immediately. He said the review would determine whether any hidden code or “backdoors” were added that could be used to spy on or attack U.S. systems.

The concern is not just about what was done in the past. It’s also about protecting the future. Cloud systems are key to modern defense operations. They store data, help with communication, and support military planning. If these systems are not secure, the entire defense network could be at risk.

This situation raises bigger questions about how the U.S. government works with private companies and foreign workers. Many tech companies, including Microsoft, rely on global talent to build complex systems. But when national security is involved, relying on foreign engineers—especially those linked to a rival government—can create serious vulnerabilities.

The investigation also brings attention to decisions made under past administrations. The “Digital Escorts” program started almost a decade ago. It was built to work around security rules without officially breaking them. But now, under closer review, it’s being seen as a major security mistake.

Secretary Hegseth said that the Department of Defense is now committed to making sure this never happens again. He emphasized that “America First” is more than just a slogan—it’s a guiding principle for how defense work should be done. He wants all defense contractors to put national security ahead of profits.

This case could have long-term effects on how the U.S. handles security in the tech world. It may lead to stricter rules for who can work on military projects and how companies are held accountable. It could also push more defense work to be done by American citizens on U.S. soil.

In the meantime, the investigation is just beginning. Microsoft is under pressure to explain how foreign engineers were allowed to work on Pentagon systems for so long, and what risks that may have created. The answers could reshape how the U.S. government builds and protects its digital infrastructure.

What’s clear now is that national security leaders are taking the issue seriously. And as Secretary Hegseth said, the use of Chinese nationals on defense cloud systems is over. The focus now is on securing the systems that protect the country—and making sure that mistakes like this don’t happen again.
