Former CIA Director John Brennan went on MSNBC this weekend and casually admitted there's a "legion" of deep state operatives embedded inside the DOJ and CIA who are actively resisting President Trump's lawful orders. Not alleged. Not rumored. Admitted — by the guy who used to run the place.
We spent years being called conspiracy theorists for saying the intelligence community was running a shadow resistance against the elected president. Turns out we owed ourselves an apology for underselling it.
Brennan sat down with MSNBC anchor Nicolle Wallace on May 11, 2026, and delivered what should have been the most explosive confession in modern political history. "There's still a legion of professionals in the law enforcement environment, Department of Justice, as well as the CIA and other places," Brennan said, with all the casual confidence of a man ordering a sandwich. A legion. His word, not ours.
But he wasn't done. Brennan went on to describe these operatives as "the ones who are refusing to follow politically motivated prosecutions, those who are refusing to support any type of political activities on the part of the Trump administration that are inconsistent with the authorities, the responsibilities of the intelligence community, law enforcement community, and Department of Justice." Translation: unelected bureaucrats have decided they get to overrule the President of the United States.
That's not whistleblowing. That's insubordination dressed up in a blazer.

Let's be very clear about what just happened. The former director of the Central Intelligence Agency — the man who once sat atop the most powerful spy agency on earth — went on national television and bragged that the intelligence apparatus is running an organized resistance campaign against the sitting president. And the host didn't blink. The network didn't issue a correction. Nobody called it what it is: an admission that the administrative state believes it answers to no one.
Brennan even had the nerve to frame this as noble duty. "So, we have to rely on these individuals to stand up to their professional responsibilities and also to courts, to the judges," he said. Professional responsibilities. That's a nice way of saying "ignore the guy 80 million people voted for and do whatever we want."
This is the same John Brennan, by the way, who's been circling the legal drain alongside his buddy former FBI Director James Comey ever since the investigations into their conduct started heating up last July. Current CIA Director John Ratcliffe has been cleaning house, and US Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones out of the Southern District of Florida has been tightening the screws. These aren't abstract threats to Brennan. They're real.
So what does a cornered spook do? He goes on friendly television and tries to rally his troops. "What has happened to our institutions is really going to have longstanding damage to these institutions," Brennan lamented. Your institutions, John. Not ours. We never got a vote on whether the CIA should run domestic political operations against an elected president.

For years, we were told the deep state was a figment of the MAGA imagination. A right-wing fever dream. A conspiracy theory for people who watch too much TV. Now the man who literally directed the CIA is on camera confirming it exists, describing how it operates, and cheering it on.
The deep state isn't a conspiracy theory anymore. It's a résumé bullet point. And John Brennan just gave the keynote speech.
