Turns Out the Russia Hoax and the Ukraine Impeachment Were the Same Scam — Same Actors, Same Playbook, Just a New Country on the Letterhead

For six years we’ve been called conspiracy theorists, tinfoil hat crazies, MAGA fever dream patients, and every other polite word the cable news green room could come up with. Why? Because we kept pointing at the Russia collusion hoax and then at the Ukraine impeachment and saying the same thing to anyone who would listen — these aren’t two different scandals. This is one long operation with a costume change.

Turns out we weren’t crazy. We were just early.

Newly surfaced documents that landed this week confirm what every honest observer has been saying since 2019. The Ukraine impeachment push wasn’t a separate investigation into some genuine concern about a phone call. It was the exact same network of intelligence community operatives, congressional staffers, and media enablers who ran the Mueller probe into the ground, desperately scrambling to find a new vehicle to take down Trump after their first one broke down in the middle of the highway.

Mueller flamed out in July 2019. Robert Mueller himself sat in front of Congress looking like a man trying to remember what year it was, and the entire “Trump is a Russian asset” narrative died on live television in front of about forty million Americans. Two weeks later — TWO WEEKS — a mysterious “whistleblower” appeared out of the CIA with a complaint about a Ukraine phone call. Two weeks. The body of the Russia hoax wasn’t even cold yet and somehow a brand new impeachment-ready complaint just happened to materialize from inside the exact same building full of the same people who had spent three years running the Russia op.

Quite the coincidence.

We were told to take it seriously. We were told this was different. We were told Adam Schiff — yes, the same Adam Schiff who spent three years on cable news holding up documents he claimed proved Trump was a Russian agent — was now sincerely concerned about ethical conduct with a foreign government. That the coincidence of the whistleblower’s lawyer literally tweeting in 2017 that “the coup has started” and “impeachment will follow ultimately” had nothing to do with anything.

You had to pretend, if you wanted to be treated like a serious person at a Washington cocktail party, that none of that was suspicious. That a CIA officer whose attorney publicly celebrated an anti-Trump coup just happened to stumble into a legitimate whistleblower complaint. That the complaint format had been quietly changed weeks before his filing to accept secondhand hearsay. That Schiff’s staff just happened to have coached him on how to file it before the complaint was even officially filed. These were all, we were assured, the kind of whimsical coincidences that happen in a functioning republic.

And anyone who pointed out the pattern was a nut. A tinfoil hat. A threat to democracy.

Well. The documents are here now. In black and white. Receipts. The kind of paperwork that doesn’t care about your feelings or your MSNBC contributor contract.

The same players. The same intelligence community workarounds. The same process of laundering a political operation through “official channels” to make a domestic coup attempt look like a concerned civil servant doing his duty. The only thing that changed between Russia and Ukraine was the country on the letterhead. Everything else — the leak strategy, the friendly reporters, the choreographed congressional hearings, the breathless cable news countdowns — was the same machine running the same program with a software patch.

And here’s the part that should make every American mad regardless of which team jersey you wear. This wasn’t Congress doing its job. This wasn’t the free press holding power accountable. This was an unelected faction inside the permanent bureaucracy deciding they didn’t like who 63 million voters picked for president, and running a four-year operation to undo the election by any means available. When Russia didn’t work, they went to Ukraine. If Ukraine hadn’t worked, we’d all be reading about the Venezuela phone call right now.

The media won’t apologize. Don’t wait for it. Jim Acosta isn’t going to stand on his new podcast in front of a ring light and admit he spent four years carrying water for a hoax. Rachel Maddow isn’t going to look into the camera with those wide crazy eyes and say “you know what, folks, it turns out we were the misinformation.” The Washington Post isn’t going to retract eleven thousand articles or give back the Pulitzer they won for reporting a lie.

They’ll just move on. They always do. They’ll find some new shiny object to wave in front of the country and hope we forget. That’s the playbook. Tell the lie loud, tell it often, and when it collapses, walk away whistling and pretend you were always skeptical.

But we remember.

We remember every news anchor who called us crazy. We remember every Congressman who went on Sunday shows with a straight face and insisted Trump was an agent of the Kremlin. We remember every blue-check pundit who told us the walls were closing in, the noose was tightening, that this weekend — every weekend — was the end. We remember the smirks. We remember the lectures. We remember the moral preening.

And now we have the documents.

You don’t have to be a lawyer to read what’s in front of you. You just have to be able to read. It was one long hoax. The names didn’t change, the goals didn’t change, the methods didn’t change. Only the country on the cover page got updated. A coup attempt dressed up as a constitutional process, wearing a Ukraine costume because Russia was in the laundry.

They lied to us for six years and they got away with it every single day of those six years. The question now is whether anybody is going to face a consequence, or whether the entire machine gets to just quietly retire to MSNBC contributor roles and Georgetown faculty chairs and hope the country has goldfish memory.

Because if nobody pays, they’ll do it again. To the next guy. To you.

And next time they’ll just change the country on the letterhead.
