Trump Rejects Democrats’ Absurd ICE Idea

The Senate Majority Leader walked into the Oval Office with what he probably thought was a clever compromise. John Thune had a plan: fund the Department of Homeland Security, but quietly yank the money for ICE — the one agency actually doing the job Democrats hate most. Fund it later, he promised. Through reconciliation. Down the road. Eventually. Maybe.

Trump looked at that deal the way a rancher looks at a coyote near the henhouse.

No.

The Art of the Non-Deal

Here’s what Thune pitched, according to Punchbowl News: strip ICE funding out of the DHS bill, hand Democrats a win they didn’t earn, and promise to backfill the money later through reconciliation. The supposed sweetener? Democrats wouldn’t get some of their pet demands — no banning masks for federal agents, no requiring judicial warrants. Plus, TSA agents would finally get their paychecks, and those security-line nightmares at airports would end.

Sounds reasonable if you squint hard enough and forget that “we’ll fund it later” is Washington’s oldest lie. Right up there with “this is temporary” and “we’ll read the bill before we vote.”

Trump wasn’t buying. Multiple sources confirmed the president shot it down and told Republicans to stay planted in D.C. and keep fighting. No retreat. No recess. No surrender on the SAVE America Act — the GOP’s voter ID and proof-of-citizenship bill that Democrats treat like garlic at a vampire convention.

Easter Dinner or Else

And here’s where it gets good. Trump didn’t just reject the deal — he warned he’d publicly torch any Senate Republican who skipped town for recess. Then he sweetened the pot by inviting every GOP senator and their families to Easter dinner at the White House.

Some Republicans reportedly took that as a threat, not a reward. Which tells you everything you need to know about the state of the Republican spine in 2026. A dinner invitation from the President of the United States and they’re sweating like they just got a subpoena.

Trump took the fight to Truth Social Sunday night and left zero room for interpretation:

“I don’t think we should make any deal with the Crazy, Country Destroying, Radical Left Democrats unless, and until, they Vote with Republicans to pass ‘THE SAVE AMERICA ACT.’”

He went further, calling the proposed ICE funding cut a five-billion-dollar gift to the same people who created the border crisis in the first place:

“It is far more important than anything else we are doing in the Senate, and that includes giving these same terrible people, the Dems (who are to blame for this mess!), a Five Billion Dollar cut in ICE funding, a deal which, even when disguised as something else, is unacceptable to me and the American people — UNLESS it includes their approval of Voter I.D., (with picture!), Citizenship to Vote, No Mail-In Voting (with exceptions), All Paper Ballots, No Men In Women’s Sports, and No Transgender MUTILIZATION of our precious children. Put it all together, and also, let Leader Thune clearly identify those few ‘Republicans’ that are Voting against AMERICA. They will never be elected again! In other words, lump everything together as one, and VOTE!!! Kill the Filibuster, and stay in D.C. for Easter, if necessary.”

The Real Problem

Look, Thune isn’t a villain here. He’s a dealmaker doing what dealmakers do — trying to find the path of least resistance. But that’s exactly the instinct that’s gotten the Republican Party steamrolled for decades. Democrats never water down their demands. They dig in, shut things down, and wait for the GOP to flinch. And somebody always flinches.

Not this time. Trump didn’t tiptoe around this — he brought a bulldozer. He wants every item on the conservative wish list bundled into one vote. Voter ID with photo. Proof of citizenship. Paper ballots. The whole package. And he wants every senator on the record, standing in the sunlight where voters can see them.

Yes, TSA lines are ugly right now. The DHS shutdown is real and people feel it every time they shuffle through airport security like cattle. Democrats are counting on that pain to break Republican resolve. It’s the oldest play in their book — manufacture a crisis, blame the other side, and wait for the cave.

But Trump is betting that Americans care more about who’s voting in their elections than how long they wait at Gate B12. And if history is any guide, that’s a bet worth taking.

Republicans have a choice: cut a deal that guts the one agency enforcing immigration law, or hold the line and force Democrats to vote against election integrity on camera. One option is comfortable. The other one wins.

Easter dinner at the White House sounds pretty good right about now.
