The nation's capital — you know, the city that houses Congress, the White House, and roughly 47 federal law enforcement agencies — might be about to elect a mayor who thinks policing is rooted in white supremacy. Janeese Lewis George, a D.C. City Council member from Ward 4 and a proud card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is emerging as a serious contender in the June 16 mayoral primary.
Because of course she is. Where else but the epicenter of liberal elitist's hub, aka Washington, D.C., would a woman who wants to defund the police and once introduced something called the "White Supremacy in Policing Prevention Act" be considered a viable candidate for the top job?
Lewis George has never been shy about her views on law enforcement. "The transformation of American police departments, especially the MPD, into military units trained to occupy the very communities promised protection is one of the greatest dangers to the future of urban life," she's said. She's also been crystal clear on the money question: "I will absolutely divest from MPD and put that money into violence interruption programs." The MPD currently has a $550 million budget, so that's a lot of "violence interruption" yoga classes.
And she didn't stop there. "More policing doesn't work, we can't enforce our way to safer communities," Lewis George has declared. Got it. The woman who wants to run the city thinks the thing that keeps cities safe doesn't work.
Lewis George joined the DSA back in October 2019 and won her Ward 4 council seat in 2020 — right in the middle of the "defund" fever dream. She introduced the White Supremacy in Policing Prevention Act in February 2021, because apparently the D.C. Council didn't have enough things to waste time on.
Her track record on public safety gets better. When the council voted on a youth curfew measure, Lewis George was one of five "nay" votes in an 8-5 decision, arguing that "right now, using the curfew as a tool for our young people is dangerous." Dangerous. Telling teenagers to go home at night is dangerous. Meanwhile, you know what's actually dangerous? Being a pedestrian in D.C. after midnight.
She also weighed in on the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin back in August 2020 — the case where Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley ultimately declined to charge officer Rusten Sheskey — by declaring, "We are not safe in our own bodies." The left loves a good slogan that has absolutely nothing to do with the jurisdiction the person actually represents.
As Just The News reports, this is the first D.C. mayoral primary using ranked choice voting, which is basically the electoral system designed in a lab to help exactly this kind of candidate win. Outgoing Mayor Muriel Bowser is leaving, and opponent Kenyan McDuffie is trying to offer a more moderate alternative. But if you think D.C. Democratic primary voters are going to pick "moderate" when they can pick "socialist who hates cops," I've got a bridge to sell you.
The DSA has already proven it can win big-city races — their guy Zohran Mamdani is currently the mayor of New York City. So this isn't some fringe fantasy anymore. This is a pattern.
Let me get this straight: the city where the Capitol Police, the Secret Service, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals, and about two dozen other federal agencies are headquartered could be run by a woman who thinks the entire concept of policing is white supremacy. The irony doesn't just write itself — it writes a whole novel.
