Watch: Bill Maher Lures Adam Schiff Into An Embarrassing Trap

There’s a special kind of television moment when a guy walks into a room thinking he’s the smartest person in it — and walks out having handed his opponent a loaded weapon, fired it himself, and somehow looked surprised by the bang. Friday night on Real Time with Bill Maher, Adam Schiff delivered one of those moments. Frame it. Put it on the wall.

The Setup

Schiff — California’s favorite pencil-necked senator, professional Trump antagonist, and self-appointed guardian of constitutional norms — sat down with Maher to talk Iran, Epstein, and whatever else the left uses to fill airtime these days. He was comfortable. He was confident. He had no idea what was coming.

Maher read him a statement from “the administration” justifying military force: “The president has the constitutional authority to direct the use of military force because he could reasonably determine that such use of force was in the national interest.”

Schiff didn’t hesitate. He scoffed. “Totally vague,” he fired back.

You could almost hear the trap click shut.

The Reveal

Maher — who, love him or hate him, still has enough of a functional brain to recognize rank hypocrisy — let the silence hang for just a beat. Then he dropped it: that statement wasn’t from the Trump administration. It was from Barack Obama’s team, used to justify military operations in Libya.

Obama’s Libya. The war Democrats never called a war. The one Schiff himself voted to continue when Congress had the chance to pull the plug in June 2011.

Let that marinate.

The Scramble

Schiff’s response was a masterclass in political tap-dancing. He pivoted faster than a spinning top on a hot griddle, suddenly bringing up Syria, Assad, poison gas, congressional votes — anything to get out of the spotlight he’d just walked directly into.

“Well, Obama made the argument initially that he could go into Syria without authorization. I and many others pushed back on that argument. Ultimately, he did not go forward with going after Assad, even though Assad was gassing his own people, because he thought he might lose the vote in Congress. But I respect the fact that was important to him, and the fact that he did not have the support of Congress meant that we weren’t going to go forward.”

Notice what he didn’t do? Defend his own Libya vote. Acknowledge the hypocrisy. Or answer the original question.

Because he couldn’t. The math doesn’t work. Schiff spent years selling himself as the constitutional conscience of Congress — and the whole time, his voting record was sitting in the corner like a receipt he forgot to throw away.

The History They Hope You Forget

The Cato Institute flagged it back in May 2011: Obama’s Libya operation was legally shaky under Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 — the clause that gives Congress, not the president, the power to declare war. Libya wasn’t threatening the United States. There was no imminent attack to prevent. But bombs fell anyway, and the justification was essentially, “Trust us, it’s in the national interest.”

Sound familiar?

When Congress finally voted on the War Powers Resolution to decide whether American forces stayed or left Libya, Schiff voted to keep them there. Not to bring the troops home. Not to assert congressional authority. He voted to leave them in a war his party never technically declared.

And now he’s on television calling Trump’s Iran justification “totally vague.”

The Punchline

Trump didn’t tiptoe around Iran — he acted, owned it, and didn’t pretend the legal scaffolding was invented yesterday. The left’s problem isn’t the constitutional principle. It never was. Their problem is the name on the door of the Oval Office.

When Obama did it, it was statecraft. When Trump does it, it’s a constitutional crisis. Adam Schiff spent Friday night proving exactly that — with Bill Maher holding the mirror.

The trap wasn’t even sophisticated. Schiff just walked in anyway.
