60 Minutes Anchor So Triggered by a Conservative Boss He Got Himself Fired on the Spot

Scott Pelley, longtime 60 Minutes correspondent, just got his contract terminated by CBS News after he hijacked a staff meeting to trash the show's new executive producer, Nick Bilton. Pelley was apparently so horrified by the idea of working under someone connected to CBS News chief Bari Weiss that he decided a public meltdown was the more dignified career move.

Spoiler: it was not.

Bilton, who replaced former executive producer Tanya Simon, didn't let the tantrum slide. In a letter obtained by Puck's Dylan Byers, Bilton told Pelley exactly what happened: "You hijacked my first meeting with staff to disparage me, my qualifications, and my intentions with remarkable incivility and contempt." Bilton's letter also noted that "joining 60 Minutes is the honor of my career" — a sentiment Pelley apparently did not share about working alongside him.

The result? Pelley was "terminated for cause effective immediately." Not suspended. Not asked to take a leave of absence to "reflect." Fired. On the spot. June 2, 2026 — mark the date.

Let's be honest about what actually happened here. Pelley didn't have a professional disagreement about editorial direction. He threw a fit because the legacy media bubble he's lived in for decades just got a tiny crack of ideological diversity, and he couldn't handle it.

[AD BREAK]

Bari Weiss — the woman who left the New York Times because the newsroom had become a progressive conformity factory — is now running the show at CBS News. And the old guard is melting down like snowflakes in July. The New York Post's Kirsten Fleming called the internal revolt what it is: "sabotage" and "martyrdom for the rotting left." Hard to argue with that assessment.

According to Breitbart's reporting, CBS staffers are divided over the firing. Some apparently think Pelley was brave. Others presumably understand that screaming at your new boss on day one is what we call a career-limiting move in every industry except journalism — where it's apparently been tolerated for decades.

But not anymore. That's the real story.

The dinosaurs of legacy media have operated for so long under the assumption that their worldview is the only acceptable one that they literally cannot function when someone outside their ideological tribe walks through the door. Pelley didn't get fired for being a journalist. He got fired for acting like a toddler whose favorite toy got taken away.

Breitbart's John Nolte put it best — this is the old media establishment watching itself go extinct in real time, and choosing to scream about it rather than adapt.

Here's a free career tip for any other legacy media anchors thinking about staging their own protest: when the new boss shows up, maybe try doing your job instead of auditioning for a martyrdom segment on MSNBC. Scott Pelley just learned the hard way that even CBS has limits on how much liberal hysteria it'll tolerate.

The era of 60 Minutes as a progressive safe space is over. And all it cost was one anchor's career.
