The Vances Just Had a Baby — the First VP Birth in 156 Years — and the Left Can't Stand It

Alec Neel Vance, the fourth child of Vice President JD Vance and Usha Vance, arrived Sunday morning at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center — seven pounds of history. He's the first child born to a sitting vice president since 1870, during the Grant administration.

Vice President JD Vance, 41, and Second Lady Usha Vance released a statement confirming the news: "We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother."

Alec joins siblings Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4 — making it two boys and two girls for the Vance family.

The historical rarity is genuinely remarkable. According to the White House Historical Association, only two other vice presidents have welcomed children while in office. John C. Calhoun and his wife Floride Bonneau had a son, William, in 1829. Then Schuyler Colfax Jr., serving as vice president to Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife Ellen had their son in 1870 — the last time this happened before Sunday. The transcontinental railroad was a year old. Women couldn't vote. The country has changed beyond recognition since, and the Vance family just added one more American to it.

The story behind the decision to have a fourth child deserves more than a footnote.

JD Vance has been open about wanting a larger family for years. At the 2025 March for Life, he put it plainly: "I want more babies in the United States of America." But the personal story behind Alec Neel is more specific than a policy position.

In September 2025, conservative activist and Vance friend Charlie Kirk was assassinated. Vance was among those who sat with Kirk's widow Erika in the immediate aftermath. Through tears, she told them she regretted having only two children with Charlie. Vance recounts the moment in his book "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," published earlier this year.

Usha described the impact in an interview with CBS News Sunday Morning. "I think it really heightened JD's sense that he'd been talking about this for a while — this sense that there was this possibility of having another kid whom he could love as much as the three that we had." She added that the conversation had already been underway before Kirk's death. "I think I had already started to open my mind to the possibility. I wouldn't say this was for me in any way the decisive factor, but it came in the middle of a conversation that we were already having."

That conversation had started even before the vice presidency began. "I remember when we decided to run for vice president, I said, 'Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid,'" Vance has said publicly. Usha said she found herself feeling "more and more, kind of, excited about that possibility."

Vance didn't just talk about pro-family policy from a podium — he's living it, in the most visible house in the country short of the White House itself. Every policy speech about child tax credits and parental leave carries a little more weight when you've got a newborn at home and three other kids fighting over who gets to hold him.

The name carries meaning as well. Neel is Usha's family name — a nod to her Indian-American heritage. Two boys, two girls, born on a Sunday morning in July to two people who chose, with full knowledge of the weight of loss, to build something bigger than themselves.
