Fourteen confidential human sources inside the FBI's own intelligence network were feeding the bureau evidence of Biden family corruption. One had been reporting since 2012. Another started in 2015. A third delivered Biden-related intelligence in October 2019. All of them were flagged, cataloged, and effectively buried by an internal operation most of the country has never heard of.
Its codename was Round River.
According to a newly declassified Director of National Intelligence memo, the FBI's Foreign Influence Task Force — Russia, known internally as FITF-R, "unofficially formed a group" around December 2019 to review all reporting tied to Biden and Ukraine. The team called itself Round River. It had "administrative accesses to all reporting and drafted intelligence products." And when it finished its work, the conclusion was predictable: "The Round River team did not corroborate any of the allegations of the 'Ukraine narrative.'"
Fourteen sources. Years of reporting. Exposed to a single internal team with a pre-baked conclusion and the administrative power to stamp "disinformation" on whatever it wanted.
The informant reporting wasn't vague. One source told the FBI that Ukrainian energy executive Mykola Zlochevsky was "using his relationship with Hunter Biden to get closer to the Americans." Another described the arrangement as a "long-term operation/long penetration." A third reported directly that "Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, have money invested into Burisma." These weren't anonymous tips scribbled on napkins. These were established confidential sources inside the bureau's own intelligence apparatus, some with over a decade of service.
Then Round River went further. The DNI memo reveals that the FBI retroactively amended the files of at least three of those confidential human sources — going back into existing records and retagging their long-term reporting as Russian disinformation. The sources' accounts were unchanged. The evidence stood exactly as reported. The FBI simply rewrote the file.
The DNI memo also reveals that the FBI maintained a "Defensive Briefing Spreadsheet" listing six dozen prominent organizations and individuals — categorized as either "targets" of disinformation or "conduits" for it. Attorney General Bill Barr and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were on the list. So were Senators Chuck Grassley, Ron Johnson, and Lindsey Graham, all actively investigating Biden family finances at the time. House committee chairs Devin Nunes and Jim Jordan were listed as well. Fox News and One America News were categorized as "conduits." Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and George Soros were listed as "targets."
The FBI wasn't just ignoring evidence of corruption. It was running a counterintelligence-style operation against its own informants, its own congressional overseers, the sitting Attorney General, and the journalists covering the story — all to protect a presidential candidate during an election year.
FBI Director Kash Patel, in a letter accompanying the declassified documents, did not hedge. The Foreign Influence Task Force, Patel wrote, "was used as a political tool to neutralize an alleged corruption narrative." The bureau is now "firmly committed to identifying, investigating and holding accountable all abuses."
The parallels to Crossfire Hurricane are impossible to ignore. In 2017, following Trump's firing of Director James Comey, the FBI opened an investigation codenamed Oxferd Comma — probing whether the president was "directed by, controlled by, and/or coordinated activities with" Russia. The misspelling of "Oxford" as "Oxferd" may not have been a typo. Investigators believe it was intentional, designed to complicate FOIA discovery. Round River followed the same institutional playbook: use the machinery of national security to launder a political objective, and build the obfuscation in from the start. The difference is that Crossfire Hurricane and Oxferd Comma targeted the incoming president. Round River targeted the evidence against his opponent.
Hunter Biden was eventually convicted of tax and gun crimes. Joe Biden pardoned him. IRS whistleblowers and business partners came forward in 2023. The House Oversight Committee concluded its impeachment inquiry in August 2024. None of it mattered in 2020, because by then Round River had already done its job.
Fourteen sources fed the FBI evidence of corruption over the course of a decade. The FBI assembled a secret team, gave it access to everything, declared the evidence Russian disinformation, and then retroactively rewrote the source files to make the cover-up permanent. The team operated without an official charter, congressional authorization, or oversight.
That's not an intelligence failure. That's an intelligence operation.
