Minneapolis police executed a search warrant Tuesday night on the apartment where Rep. Ilhan Omar's son lives, recovering firearms and ammunition from the residence. His roommate, 22-year-old Abdulrahman Tulle Abdi, was arrested on a weapons charge and booked into Hennepin County Jail.
Omar's son was not charged. Abdi was released Wednesday night.
Alpha News reporter Liz Collin broke the story on X: "Multiple law enforcement sources say a search warrant was conducted Tuesday night on the apartment where Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's son lives in Minneapolis. Guns and ammunition were recovered from the scene." The Minneapolis Police Department has not issued a public statement beyond confirming the warrant was executed.
Abdi's record makes the roommate arrangement look like an interesting life choice. The 22-year-old has 10 prior convictions. Ten. Among them: a felony charge for fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, for which he received one day in Dakota County Jail and two years of supervised probation. In a separate incident, Abdi allegedly drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee at 108 mph. He's also been charged with driving after cancellation and failing to provide proof of insurance.
The investigation reportedly didn't start with the apartment at all. It began with a traffic stop — a vehicle was impounded, and a firearm was discovered during the impound process. That discovery led to the search warrant on the Minneapolis residence, where additional guns and ammunition were seized.
Now, if Omar's son's name were Smith and his mother were a Republican backbencher from Ohio, this would be a local crime blotter item and nothing more. A roommate with a record gets popped on a weapons charge. It happens.
But Omar's son doesn't have a mother from Ohio. He has a mother who has spent her entire congressional career advocating for gun control, co-sponsoring legislation to restrict firearm access, and lecturing Americans about the dangers of private gun ownership. The congresswoman who wants federal red flag laws apparently didn't notice ten convictions' worth of red flags living in her son's apartment.
The "rules for thee" dimension writes itself, but the more interesting question is the practical one. Abdi has 10 convictions and a felony on his record. Under existing federal law — the kind Omar supports expanding — a convicted felon in possession of a firearm is a serious offense. That's not a conservative talking point. That's 18 U.S.C. § 922(g). The laws Omar wants to impose on lawful gun owners already apply to this situation. They just didn't prevent it.
Abdi walked out of Hennepin County Jail Wednesday night. One day in Dakota County for fleeing police at felony speed. Released the next evening after guns were seized from a residence. At some point the pattern stops being a justice system and starts being a revolving door with a uniform standing next to it.
The case remains ongoing, and Omar's office has not commented. Which tracks — there's no version of "my son's roommate had an arsenal and ten convictions" that plays well in a press release.
Omar has built a brand on the idea that America has too many guns in the wrong hands. On Tuesday night, the Minneapolis Police Department agreed with her — they just started the confiscation at her son's front door.
