An illegal alien fleeing an ICE stop in North Brunswick, New Jersey, ran a red light and slammed into a Tesla carrying the wife of East Brunswick Mayor Brad Cohen. She was injured in the collision. The driver had been stopped lawfully by federal immigration authorities — and chose to floor it rather than face the consequences.
The reason he thought he could get away with it isn't complicated. New Jersey told him he could.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill's administration has maintained what's known as the "Trust Directive" — a state policy that limits New Jersey law enforcement's cooperation with ICE. The directive effectively tells local cops to stand down when federal agents come looking for illegal aliens. Republican State Assemblyman Paul Kanitra didn't mince words about it.
"This is just the latest in a long line of traffic incidents," Kanitra told Just The News. "We all fought against it. We told them that this would create chaos."
State Republican Senator Mike Testa went further, tying the incident directly to Sherrill's policy framework. "I think it has only emboldened illegal aliens to engage in illegal behavior," Testa said. "This illegal alien was stopped lawfully by federal authorities" before fleeing and causing the crash. "This is just another example of lawlessness."
ICE agents had the driver. They had him stopped. Under normal circumstances in a state that cooperates with federal law enforcement, that interaction ends with a detained individual and zero collateral damage. But New Jersey isn't a normal state anymore. The Trust Directive created an environment where illegal aliens understand — correctly — that state authorities won't back up the feds. So when this particular individual decided to run, he was making a mental calculation based on the rules New Jersey set up for him.
Kanitra pointed out the deeper pattern: "Democrats seemingly have an inability to take accountability" for the consequences of their own policies.
New Jersey Democratic Representative Bonnie Watson-Coleman has been among those defending the state's approach to immigration enforcement. The argument from that side has always been that limiting ICE cooperation builds "trust" with immigrant communities. That's the whole premise baked into the directive's name.
Interesting word, "trust." The Trust Directive asked New Jersey residents to trust that shielding illegal aliens from federal law enforcement wouldn't put anyone at risk. Mayor Cohen's wife just found out what that trust is worth from the inside of a wrecked Tesla.
Sanctuary policies always come with a sales pitch about community safety and humane enforcement. They never come with an asterisk explaining who absorbs the risk when things go wrong. Now we know. It's whoever happens to be in the intersection.
