"Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump's hit list," Newsom declared, dripping with the self-importance that only a man with presidential ambitions and a hair gel budget can muster. "He has directed his Department of Justice to investigate us."
The governor didn't deny anything. He didn't explain anything. He announced his own investigation and then immediately told you whose fault it was. That's not a defense — that's a distraction wrapped in a press release.
Newsom went on to claim, "They have not found a crime — they are simply trying to find one." Which is a fascinating thing to say when the DOJ investigation reportedly involves his wife's taxes. Last time we checked, tax issues aren't exactly political fiction — just ask anyone who's gotten a letter from the IRS.
But here's the real kicker. Newsom couldn't resist throwing in the grand finale: "Donald Trump is simply the most corrupt president in American history." That's rich coming from the governor of a state where people are fleeing faster than U-Haul can restock trucks. The guy presiding over rampant homelessness, skyrocketing crime, and an exodus of taxpayers wants to lecture us about corruption.
What Newsom conveniently left out of his righteous victim speech is the part that blows the whole narrative apart: this investigation didn't start under Donald Trump. According to multiple reports and confirmed by Trump administration official Richard Grenell, the probe originated in 2025 — when Joe Biden was still in the Oval Office — after a whistleblower filed complaints about the couple's personal finances.
The investigation was opened out of California's Eastern District, and sources told the Associated Press that Washington wasn't even involved in the decision to launch it. So the "Trump political hit job" framing falls apart the moment you ask one simple question: why was Biden's DOJ already looking at you, Gavin?
The timing here is no accident. Newsom is widely considered a potential 2028 presidential candidate — the same Gavin Newsom who loyally backed President Joe Biden's 2024 re-election before Vice President Kamala Harris took over the ticket and faceplanted into history. Now he's positioning himself as Trump's number-one target, which is exactly the kind of résumé booster Democrat primary voters eat up.
Newsom alleges the DOJ is targeting family members and associates and abusing the grand jury process. Again — no specifics, no evidence of political targeting, just vibes and victimhood.
