NASA Drops the Pretense: We're in a Space Race With China and They're Not Slowing Down

Four American astronauts looped around the moon in April aboard Artemis II. It was the first crewed lunar flyby in over half a century. And NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman went on CBS's "Face the Nation" this weekend not to celebrate — but to warn that it might not be enough.

"The Chinese will land their taikonauts on the moon. There's no question," Isaacman said.

That's not hedging. That's the head of America's space agency saying our chief rival is going to plant boots on lunar soil — and the only question is whether we get there first.

Isaacman told CBS the United States is "very much in a space race right now" and framed the competition in terms that would've made the Cold War crowd wince. "The Chinese are moving at incredible speeds," he said, "and they are certainly capable of doing what the Soviets were not."

NASA laid out a timeline that's aggressive by any government standard. Artemis III is scheduled for next year and will test critical lunar landing systems. By 2027, NASA plans to hit a nearly monthly mission cadence to start building out moon base infrastructure. The target for putting American astronauts back on the lunar surface is 2028.

"The question is, will the United States return before them," Isaacman said, "and will we do so in a different way this time, when we build a base, establish that enduring presence?"

That phrase — "a different way this time" — is doing a lot of work. The Apollo program planted flags, collected rocks, and came home. What Isaacman is describing is permanent infrastructure. Buggies. Crew rotations. A lunar terrain vehicle. The kind of sustained presence that turns a visit into a foothold.

"You're going to see the three most powerful rockets in the world" involved in Artemis III, he said. And by the "early 2030s, the moon is going to be like the International Space Station" — with crews stationed there for extended periods.

The obvious counterargument is that we've heard ambitious NASA timelines before. We heard them under Obama, under Biden, under administrators who spent more time on workforce diversity statements than launch schedules. Timelines slipped. Budgets bloated. The Artemis program itself was years behind before Isaacman took the reins.

But there's a difference between a career bureaucrat reading aspirational milestones off a PowerPoint and a guy who personally flew to space on his own dime telling you the competition is real and the clock is running. Isaacman made his fortune in fintech, commanded the first all-civilian orbital mission, and doesn't talk like someone who thinks "close enough" counts.

He also framed the moon not as the destination but as the rehearsal. Lunar operations, he said, will serve as a "proving ground for Mars." The base infrastructure going up by 2028 isn't just about planting another flag — it's about proving that American hardware and American crews can sustain operations beyond Earth before we push further out.

China isn't waiting around for us to figure it out. They've been running an aggressive lunar program with fewer public stumbles and none of the bureaucratic self-flagellation that's defined American space policy for the last decade. They don't hold sensitivity training before test launches.

Isaacman seems to understand that the race isn't won by the country with the best mission statement. It's won by the country that shows up.

By 2028, we'll know if the rockets matched the rhetoric.
