Five Networks Allegedly Coordinated a Boycott of the White House — DOJ Has Questions

The Department of Justice Antitrust Division is now investigating whether ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and Fox News coordinated a boycott of White House events — a move that, if proven, could violate the Sherman Act. Five competing news organizations allegedly agreed, together, to stop covering the President of the United States.

The Sherman Act prohibits unlawful agreements among competitors that restrain competition. Apparently nobody at these networks consulted a lawyer before organizing a group walkout.

DOJ spokeswoman Emily Covington confirmed the investigation directly. "Members of the television press pool have boycotted covering White House events," Covington said. "Group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act. The Antitrust Division is simply investigating to determine whether these news organizations have violated the antitrust laws."

The White House television pool is a decades-old arrangement where networks rotate responsibility for providing camera coverage of presidential events. It's a cooperative system built on the assumption that the press corps, whatever its editorial preferences, still shows up to do the job. The boycott broke that assumption. And the DOJ noticed the difference between editorial disagreement and coordinated commercial action.

This didn't happen in a vacuum. President Trump banned Politico, MS Now, and CNN from White House access back in September 2026. Trump had launched a broader offensive against media bias beginning in February 2025. The networks framed their boycott as a principled stand. The DOJ is framing it as a potential antitrust violation. Those are very different categories with very different consequences.

The media trust numbers provide useful context. A survey from early 2025 found that just 6 percent of Americans have a "great deal of confidence in journalists." That's the lowest point in over 50 years of tracking the question. Six percent. The networks decided to respond to historic public distrust by collectively refusing to cover the White House — the single most newsworthy institution in American life.

The press will argue this is retaliation for critical coverage, that the DOJ investigation itself is the threat to press freedom. But the Sherman Act doesn't have a carve-out for media companies. If five competing restaurant chains coordinated to refuse service to a customer, nobody would call it a principled stand. The legal question is whether these organizations acted independently or in concert. Covington's statement makes clear the DOJ believes the latter is worth investigating.

What makes this distinct from ordinary editorial decisions is the mechanism. A single network declining to send cameras to a briefing is an editorial choice. Five networks agreeing to do it simultaneously is an arrangement among competitors. The pool system itself is evidence of coordination infrastructure — it's designed for cooperation on logistics, not coordinated protest actions.

The networks now face a binary they built for themselves. Either they acted independently and the boycott was a coincidence — in which case, five separate news organizations all reached the same operational decision at the same time without talking to each other. Or they coordinated, and the Antitrust Division has the jurisdiction it says it does.

Six percent public confidence. A coordinated walkout from covering the presidency. And now a federal investigation.

The Sherman Act has been on the books since 1890.
