FCC Chairman Brendan Carr just said out loud what seventy million Americans have been screaming since 2016: the polls are fake, and they're being used as weapons.
The timing is not subtle. November is two months away.
Carr reportedly said the FCC is looking at issuing formal guidance to broadcasters about airing misleading polls ahead of the midterm elections. "There's a lot of interest right now in fake polls that are out there," Carr said, adding that "the FCC may put guidance out soon to remind broadcasters about their obligations with respect to not airing fake polls, particularly if they're done to suppress people heading into the fall."
That last phrase is the one that matters: "to suppress people." Not to inform them. Not to reflect public opinion. To suppress turnout. Carr is identifying the mechanism — push-polls and manufactured survey data designed not to measure voter sentiment but to shape it. To convince your side that showing up is pointless because the race is already decided.
We've seen this movie before. Every cycle, the same polling outfits produce the same conveniently timed numbers showing the same result: the Democrat is surging, the Republican is collapsing, and resistance is futile. Then Election Day arrives and the numbers don't match. Nobody gets fired. Nobody issues a correction. The same firms show up two years later with the same product.
The announcement came amid a clash between President Trump and NBC News journalist Kristen Welker, after Trump called out her characterization that his endorsed candidates had seen "mixed results" in primaries (he's actually got a near perfect endorsement record in the midterm primaries thus far) and suggested she should be reported to the FCC for "rebuke or punishment." Carr, notably, did not announce any formal investigation of Welker — the guidance he's discussing targets fake polling data, not individual journalists.
That distinction matters, because the sole Democrat on the FCC, Commissioner Anna Gomez, immediately tried to blur it. "As I've said many times, the FCC has no authority to punish journalists this administration doesn't like," Gomez said — framing the polling guidance as an attack on press freedom rather than what it actually is: a reminder that broadcasters have existing obligations not to air deliberately misleading content.
The FCC's limited authority over news content under the First Amendment. And that's true — the FCC isn't going to pull broadcast licenses over a bad poll. But guidance reminding networks that push-polls designed to suppress voter turnout aren't protected opinion journalism? That's not censorship. That's the regulatory equivalent of clearing your throat loudly in a room full of people who've been getting away with something.
The polling industrial complex has operated without accountability for decades. These aren't data-gathering operations anymore — they're narrative-setting tools. When a poll drops three weeks before an election showing a ten-point lead for the Democrat, and the Democrat wins by one, that poll wasn't wrong. It did exactly what it was designed to do. It set expectations, shaped media coverage, and depressed opposition turnout.
Carr putting broadcasters on notice doesn't fix that overnight. But it does something that hasn't happened before: it names the problem from inside a federal agency with oversight authority.
The networks can air whatever polls they want. They just might have to explain why the numbers never seem to match the ballots.
