On February 8, 2020, Dr. Anthony Fauci sat down and wrote in his personal diary that the COVID-19 case fatality rate was "more like 0.2-0.3%." He'd just gotten off the phone with former CDC Director Tom Frieden, and the two agreed the virus was "acting like a bad influenza."
Thirty-one days later, Fauci told the House Oversight Committee the fatality rate was "about three percent."
That's not a rounding error. That's a factor of ten. And it came from the man who used those inflated numbers to justify shutting down the American economy, closing schools, and locking 330 million people inside their homes.
The diary entries surfaced as part of 1,141 pages of records released by Sen. Rand Paul's Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs. The documents — dubbed "The Fauci Diaries" — show the former NIAID director running two sets of books on the pandemic. One for his private notes. One for Congress.
In his March 11, 2020 testimony, Fauci told lawmakers that "the stated mortality over all of this when you look at all the data, including China, is about three percent." He then offered what sounded like a concession: "I think if you count all the cases of minimally symptomatic or asymptomatic infection, that probably brings the mortality rate down to somewhere around one percent."
His own diary, written weeks earlier, put it at 0.2 to 0.3 percent — using a denominator of 34,867 cases. He had the math. He just didn't share it with Congress.
Dr. Harvey Risch, chairman of the Trump administration's Cancer Panel at HHS, didn't mince words about what the diary reveals. "The fact that he knew this and couldn't say the truth in public means he had other interests to pursue," Risch said.
Former CDC Director Robert Redfield piled on from a different angle, addressing the broader deception campaign that followed the inflated numbers: "This vaccine never prevented infection, so when people said 'vaccinate your children so they don't infect grandma,' that was just a false statement."
Fauci's defenders will note that early pandemic data was uncertain and evolving. Which makes it all the more remarkable that his private estimate — the one informed by a phone call with another former CDC director — turned out to be far closer to the actual infection fatality rate than anything he told Congress. His uncertainty, apparently, only cut one direction: toward bigger numbers, bigger fear, and bigger government authority.
The timing matters. Between that February 8 diary entry and the March 11 testimony, the entire framework for America's COVID response was being constructed. The lockdown models, the emergency declarations, the school closures, the small business devastation — all of it built on a fatality rate that the government's top infectious disease official privately believed was a fraction of what he was saying publicly. Three and a half million businesses didn't survive what came next.
During his recent appearance before the Senate committee, Fauci cited the Fifth Amendment over 110 times. That's a lot of silence from a man whose diary did all the talking for him.
