DOJ Follows the Money Straight to Gavin Newsom's Travel Tab — and the People Picking It Up

California Governor Gavin Newsom woke up today to some bad news from the feds. The DOJ wants to know who is funding all of his globetrotting and travel.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of California has issued subpoenas covering six years of records tied to California Governor Gavin Newsom jet setting. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Anderson is running a criminal probe into the benefactors who have been bankrolling Newsom's travel through the California State Protocol Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has quietly funneled $7.5 million in donations directed by the governor since 2019.

Of that $7.5 million, $5.1 million came from leftover inaugural funds.

The San Francisco Standard first reported the scope of the investigation, which centers on who was paying for Newsom's overseas trips and what, if anything, they expected in return. The foundation's operations were overseen by Chief Protocol Officer Rebecca Prowda — who happens to be married to San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie. The donor list reads like a who's-who of California influence: crypto billionaire Chris Larsen, philanthropists Susie Tompkins Buell and Lisa Stone Pritzker, and corporate names including CVS, Blue Shield Foundation, Zoox — an autonomous vehicle company with obvious regulatory interests — and the New Venture Fund, a dark money group that has quietly routed hundreds of millions through progressive causes.

A nonprofit controlled by the governor. Funded by corporations and billionaires with business before the state. Used to pay for international travel.

Newsom's office responded the way Newsom's office always responds — by blaming the person asking questions. A spokesperson called it an attempt to "investigate first, hunt for a crime that doesn't exist second," and accused the administration of being a "tyrant" who is "now coming after everyone around him." Note the framing: they didn't say the donations were clean. They didn't say the travel was self-funded. They said asking about it is tyranny.

That defense worked better when Newsom was the untouchable Democratic frontrunner. The man who locked down California while dining at the French Laundry. The man with the perfect hair and the perfect wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and the perfect presidential trajectory. Now DOJ has subpoena power, and a federal prosecutor with a name attached to the case.

The structure itself tells the story. A sitting governor directs millions into a nonprofit. That nonprofit pays for his travel. The donors who fund it include companies regulated by his state government. And the official overseeing the whole operation is married to the mayor of the state's most powerful city. That's not a charity. That's a concierge service with a tax exemption.

Newsom spent years positioning himself as the adult in the Democratic room — the governor who "followed the science," the leader who could replace Biden, the guy who debated Ron DeSantis on Fox like he was already running. The $7.5 million question was never whether he had ambition. It was who was funding it.

Now there's a federal prosecutor in Sacramento with six years of receipts and a grand jury subpoena. The hair gel doesn't cover that.
