On October 12, federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations walked into Rep. Ilhan Omar's Washington, D.C., residence and walked out with her passport, her phone, and her computer. Somewhere in that evidentiary haul — or obtained before it — is DNA evidence that prosecutors believe can prove the Minnesota Democrat married her own brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, in 2009 to help him secure a green card.
For years, every outlet in mainstream media told you that was a conspiracy theory.
Federal prosecutors working out of the Minnesota U.S. Attorney's Office have been building a sprawling immigration fraud case against Omar, and the DNA is the centerpiece. The investigation seeks to establish that Elmi — who currently resides in the United Kingdom — is Omar's biological sibling, and that the 2009 marriage was a sham designed to game the immigration system.
The timeline tells the story all by itself. Omar married Elmi in 2009. They separated in 2011. She didn't bother divorcing him until 2017 — conveniently, after questions about the marriage started circulating publicly. Elmi withdrew his green card application in 2019. None of those dates suggest a real marriage. All of them suggest a paper trail someone hoped would quietly disappear.
It didn't.
Omar's attorneys fired off a letter to prosecutors on October 16, four days after the search, calling the investigation "vindictive, retributive, and politically motivated" and insisting there is "no legitimate basis for any suggestion that she has violated any law concerning her citizenship status." That's a carefully worded denial. It addresses her citizenship status. It doesn't say Elmi isn't her brother.
Border Czar Tom Homan told reporters the feds have "a strong case." That's not the kind of language officials use when they're fishing. A Democratic judge approved the search warrant — which means even a judge with no political incentive to help this investigation looked at the evidence and decided it was sufficient to authorize agents to enter a sitting congresswoman's home.
But the fraud allegations don't stop at the marriage. Omar and her husband's winery reportedly sold investors barrels of wine to be aged — except there was nothing in the barrels. Companies tied to the operation, eStCru LLC and Rose Lake Capital LLC, were valued at $51,000 in 2023. By 2024, that number had ballooned to $30 million. The winery was shut down in April 2026.

The media's favorite defense of Omar was always that the brother allegation was "unproven" — which technically described every criminal case before trial. What they meant was "we'd prefer not to look into it." Investigative reporter Luke Rosiak at the Daily Wire had been documenting the paper trail for years while major outlets treated the story like a fringe rumor beneath their attention. The feds weren't so dismissive. They were quietly pulling records, interviewing whistleblowers, and — apparently — collecting DNA.
Omar's legal team wants this framed as political persecution. The problem with that framing is that DNA doesn't have a party affiliation. It doesn't care about the midterms. It doesn't read press releases. It either matches or it doesn't.
