Sen. Rand Paul's committee gave every Democrat on the panel an access code to review the collected evidence against former NIAID Director Anthony Fauci. The code would have unlocked the same documents, the same records, the same trail of receipts that the GOP majority has been building for months on COVID origins and Fauci's role in the pandemic response.
Not a single Democrat used it.
That detail landed Wednesday during a hearing exchange between Paul, the Republican chairman from Kentucky, and ranking Democrat Gary Peters of Michigan. Peters accused the GOP of having "selectively released" records and of withholding documents from the Democratic minority. It's the kind of accusation that sounds serious until you learn the other side had a key to the filing cabinet and never bothered to turn it.
Paul's response was blunt. Peters' claim, he said, was "categorically false." The GOP majority had provided Democrats with an access code to review the evidence the committee had gathered. Paul also established a public "reading room" website — paul.senate.gov/readingroom — making COVID origins documentation available to anyone with a browser and fifteen minutes. The evidence wasn't hidden. It was sitting there like an open-book exam that nobody on the left side of the aisle bothered to take.
Peters then pivoted to accusing Paul of removing part of the committee website from public view — a curious complaint from someone whose own caucus apparently couldn't be troubled to review the evidence when it was handed to them on a digital silver platter.
This is a pattern that deserves a name. Call it strategic ignorance. You don't look at the evidence, and then you complain that the evidence hasn't been shared. You decline the briefing, and then you tell reporters you were kept in the dark. It's not incompetence. It's positioning. If you never review the material, you never have to answer for what's in it.
And what's in it matters. The committee investigation centers on Anthony Fauci's potential role in the emergence of COVID-19 and decisions made during the pandemic — questions that affect every American who lost a job, buried a relative, or watched a small business die behind a plexiglass barrier. These aren't abstract policy debates. They're questions about whether the man who stood behind the podium and told the country what to do was also the man whose agency helped fund the research that may have started the whole thing.
Democrats on the committee had every opportunity to engage with that evidence, challenge its interpretation, and offer a counter-narrative grounded in the actual documents. That's what oversight is supposed to look like. Instead, they left the access code untouched and showed up to the hearing with complaints about transparency.
The access code detail is small. It fits in a single sentence. But it tells you everything about how Democrats have chosen to handle the Fauci investigation — not by confronting the evidence, but by pretending it doesn't exist while loudly insisting it's being hidden from them.
