That’s the new catchphrase of Democratic Mayor of NY City Eric Adams, who came down from his ivory tower of moral lecturing long enough to acknowledge the truth and implore the city he supposedly controls to end its sanctuary status for undocumented immigrants. For the really, very terrible ones, that is.
At a town hall meeting on Monday, he told voters, “We need to change the sanctuary city statute so that if you engage in criminal or violent conduct, we should be able to give you to ICE and have you deported.”
Deporting criminals who had no business being here in the first place? Is that something we can accomplish? By the way, that is a really significant question. A Democrat will tremble in shock if you mention the term “deportation” to them. It’s like giving a vampire the finger or making your 13-year-old fold his own laundry.
The word “deportation” is alien to today’s Democrats; try picturing President Joe Biden saying anything like “commonsense limitations on abortion after viability.”
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Adams stated, “I want to go back to the former standards of previous mayors who, I believe, agreed to my philosophy that those who are accused of committing severe crimes should be held accountable.”
“Accountable,” as well? Whoa.
Authorities are not allowed to comply “with requests from ICE to hand over migrants to them except in a limited amount of circumstances, including if someone has been found guilty of serious and violent offenses,” according to the city’s current sanctuary legislation, which was approved in 2014.
On paper, that may have seemed good, but when the 200,000 illegal aliens arrived—many more entered Texas in December alone—it lost its appeal.
To be honest, I didn’t anticipate that Adams would come to terms with reality so quickly. On August 22, 2022, nearly precisely eighteen months ago, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott transported the first busload of illegal immigrants to New York City. Shortly later, Republican governor of Florida Ron DeSantis did the same. I estimated in secret that around the one-year mark, Adams would cry uncle.
Governors Abbott and DeSantis, feel free to give yourselves a pat on the back now. No one would blame you if you worked so hard at it that you developed carpal tunnel syndrome.
