A Left-Wing Activist Tried to Bomb a Federal Building — NBC News Found a Way to Make It Boring

An incendiary device was detonated outside 26 Federal Plaza in New York City this weekend. The suspect was carrying a pellet gun and a sign reading "ICE Off Our Streets." The FBI launched a terror probe. A suspect is in custody.

NBC News covered it like a weather delay at LaGuardia.

The network's headline framed the bombing of a federal building — one that houses an immigration court — using the word "fireworks," as if someone had set off a Roman candle on the Fourth of July.

Not "bombing." Not "terror attack." Not "explosive device detonated at federal facility." Fireworks.

We don't hate the media enough.

ABC 7 in California at least had the professional decency to call it an "incendiary device" and note the building housed an immigration court. That's the bare minimum of journalism — describing what actually happened. NBC couldn't clear that bar.

Law enforcement identified the suspect as having a history of anti-ICE activity. The sign, the target, the weapon — every piece of evidence points to left-wing violence against federal immigration enforcement. The FBI is running the investigation. This is, by any conventional definition, domestic terrorism.

Here's what NBC and others should have said: Am NYC immigration building was just attacked by a left-wing domestic terrorist. America is increasingly being attacked by radicalized Democrats who turn to violence instead of the ballot box.

When a device goes off outside a federal building and the perpetrator is carrying anti-government propaganda, the word "terrorism" is supposed to show up in the first sentence. That's not editorial opinion — that's the FBI's own definition. "The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government."

If a man in a MAGA, carrying a sign that said, "Protect the Unborn" detonated a device outside a Planned Parenthood clinic do you think NBC would call it "fireworks?" No. Every anchor on every network would be mid-monologue about "the rising threat of right-wing extremism" before the smoke cleared. Congressional Democrats would have a press conference scheduled by lunch.

NBC's editorial choice wasn't an accident. Language is the only product a news network sells, and they chose "fireworks" the way Loretta Lynch made Jim Comey call the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails a "matter" rather than an "investigation" before the 2016 election. Or the way a defense attorney says "incident" instead of "assault." It's not a mistake. It's strategy. Minimize the act, obscure the motive, move on before anyone asks the obvious follow-up: why does political violence from the left get the soft-focus treatment every single time?
