The most recent NPR/Marist College poll found that independents are more likely to support former President Trump than President Biden.
People who took the poll were asked to choose between Trump and Biden in the event the 2024 presidential race had taken place today.
Biden has 47 percent of all registered votes across the country, while Trump has 46 percent. Seven percent are still not sure.
Most Democrats, 88%, back Biden, and most Republicans, 90%, also back Trump. But Trump additionally holds the edge with independent voters. Almost half, or 48%, of the independents back Trump. Biden is eight points behind, and only 40% of independents vote for him. Twelve percent still don’t know.
The poll was done with 1,220 people between August 11 and 14, 2023, and it holds a margin of error of +/- 3.5%.
Other polls have shown that Trump is ahead among independents. In July, a Harvard CAPS-Harris poll found that among independent Americans, Trump had a lead of 18 points.
After his fourth charge by a grand jury in the state of Georgia, it’s certainly possible, perhaps even likely that Trump’s popularity among independents will rise. Before his fourth accusation, Rasmussen Reports did a poll that asked Republicans and independents how they felt about his third indictment, which was connected to January 6.
As explained by Breitbart News:
“69% of Republicans disagree with the new charge at least somewhat, and of those, 61% disagree ‘strongly.’ Independents additionally say they’re not on board, with 52% saying they don’t like the new charge at least somewhat. Forty percent of those people ‘strongly’ disagree.”
“On the other hand, 64 percent of Democrats ‘strongly’ support the arrest over January 6. This is something that President Biden has been hoping for for a long time. In April 2022, the New York Times wrote about how much Biden wanted AG Merrick Garland to do more. It said that the president ‘told his closest friends that he thought former President Trump was a danger to democracy and needed to be prosecuted, which was confirmed by two people who knew what he said.’”
On Monday, after his fourth arrest, Trump is expected to hold a “major” news conference where he will give what he has called a “large, complicated detailed, yet indisputable REPORT regarding the Presidential Election Fraud that took place across Georgia.”
All allegations against myself and other people should be withdrawn in light of the findings of this CONCLUSIVE Report, he proclaimed. “They never pursued those responsible for the election’s fraud. They exclusively went after those that struggled to discover the RIGGERS!”
