Republican Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, who was successful in his attempt to remove House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from office last year, has expressed his opinion that McCarthy would be a suitable candidate to lead the Republican National Committee.
“I wholeheartedly support Kevin McCarthy to lead the RNC. Kevin is a highly successful fundraiser who is extremely well-organized. The RNC Committee will likewise think highly of him. Never does the RNC Chair decide on policies, establish an agenda, or engage in negotiations with Democrats. Kevin would be amazing,” tweeted Gaetz.
“Is there a greater troll in Congress than Matt?” Gaetz’s post was replied to by Sebastian Gorka.
In reaction to Gaetz, Molly Jong-Fast tweeted, “Stop stop he’s already gone.”
At an X Spaces event, Gaetz mentioned former New York Representative Lee Zeldin and Scott Presler as viable candidates for RNC chair. He also mentioned his admiration for Harmeet Dhillon, who ran for the position but was defeated by McDaniel.
Gaetz made the decision to remove McCarthy from the speakership last year. In the end, Gaetz and seven other Republican members voted with Democrats to remove McCarthy from office. After much deliberation, Republicans selected Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana as their successor. McCarthy made the decision to resign from Congress before the end of his tenure in service.
Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel reportedly told former President Donald Trump that she plans to leave her position following the South Carolina GOP presidential primary later this month, according to two sources who spoke with The New York Times.
