As House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) became the first Republican to be chosen unanimously by his party to head the U.S. House of Representatives since 2011, Democrats went into complete breakdown.
In an email sent to X by Punch Bowl News creator Jake Sherman, it was said that President Biden’s 2024 campaign was strongly against Johnson’s win, even though Biden congratulated Johnson in a White House statement.
“MAGA As a result of Mike Johnson becoming speaker, the House Republican Conference has been taken over by the far-right Trump supporters,” according to a statement from Biden campaign spokeswoman Ammar Moussa.
In contrast, Biden along with first lady Jill Biden expressed their “congratulations” to Johnson and pledged to make every effort to cooperate “in good faith.”
Dems. in Congress were outraged that Johnson won the Speakership on the very first ballot following three weeks of instability after Speaker Emeritus Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) removal, which was orchestrated by Representative Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
Representative Katie Porter (D-CA) said that Johnson was a “insurrectionist.”
“Rebel leader Mike Johnson is currently second in line to become president. The people of the United States deserve better,” she claimed.
Additionally, Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) called Johnson a “MAGA Extremist” after he was elected and added that Johnson’s “achievements” consist of wanting an “abortion ban” as well as voting “against LGBTQ+ rights.”
“By making this choice, Republicans have taken a page from the extreme Trump playbook,” she said.
“The GOP gave in to the radical wing of its party,” Representative Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) said.
He said in a press statement that “Johnson is a MAGA extremist who helped spark the January 6 uprising and thinks that women and LGBTQ people are not deserving of rights. Johnson is also another Trump puppet.”
A lot of well-known Democrats, like Representative Adam Schiff (R-CA), who is campaigning against Porter to take over the late Senator Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) old spot, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), spoke out against Johnson before the vote, when it looked like he would win easily.
Schiff told people not to look up information about the new Speaker on Google.
“To make it easy to understand, Johnson is a strong supporter of Trump and one of the most vocal deniers of the election in the House,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, this is what the GOP conference considers suitable for Speaker.”
“Introducing Mike Johnson, the extreme GOP candidate for Speaker,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote. “He was a key part of the plan to overturn the US election on January 6.”
“He is in charge of a crowd of people booing and ordering a congressional reporter to ‘shut up’ when they ask about it,” she said as she watched the video again.
