A prosecutor said Tuesday that a former deputy chief of staff to Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) and her husband were both arrested.
NBC New York reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested Linda Sun, a former Hochul employee, and Chris Hu, her husband, an investor.
The news source said that both the FBI and a spokeswoman for the Eastern District of New York confirmed the arrests but would not say what the charges were.
Long Island police arrested the couple. As of now, the charges against them are secret, according to a story in the New York Post on Tuesday.
“Sources in law enforcement say the arrest was part of an investigation into a crime that has nothing to do with the governor. At the time, Gov. Andrew Cuomo hired Sun to work in his office,” the Post story said.
During a raid on the couple’s $3.5 million Long Island home in July, the FBI found no evidence of criminal activity, according to Breitbart News.
At the time, this news source said it wasn’t clear if police took anything from the house that was put into a trust in March.
The Breitbart News story went on to say:
“Sun’s LinkedIn page says that her most recent job was as a campaign manager for Austin Cheng, a Democrat who ran for NY’s third congressional district but dropped out in December 2023. Sun has also worked as a “diversity officer” for the New York State Dept. of Financial Services and the NY State Executive Chamber in the past few years.”
A story from NBC says that the couple will likely show up in a Brooklyn federal court later this week.
Specifics of the charges in this case have not been made public yet. The story also mentioned that the Eastern District and FBI have recently built several other cases involving China and claimed violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
