In America today, the safety of our communities should be a given—not a luxury. Yet, with the specter of Iranian sleeper cells potentially embedding themselves across rural America, our assumptions of security are being challenged. The recent warnings from former FBI special agent and counterterrorism expert Jonathan Gilliam should awaken every patriot to a threat that is real, immediate, and demands swift action.
On June 22, President Trump’s decisive strike against Iranian nuclear sites sent a clear message: America will not tolerate threats to our national security. This bold action, fulfilling his pledge to keep America safe, has unfortunately prompted an intensified threat from Iranian-backed extremists. As the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) alerts us, the risk of retaliatory terror attacks on U.S. soil is significantly heightened, specifically in response to the destruction of Iranian nuclear facilities and the elimination of their terrorist mastermind back in 2020.
While our president is committed to securing our borders and enforcing immigration laws, we continue to grapple with the catastrophic consequences of Joe Biden’s open-border legacy. Biden’s reckless immigration policies paved the way for potential terrorists to infiltrate our nation, exploiting asylum procedures to gain entry and hide among us. Gilliam directly attributes Biden-era border negligence as a key factor enabling Iranian operatives to enter our country unchecked—placing American lives at unacceptable risk.
Americans in rural heartland communities, who value their privacy, independence, and embrace a lifestyle free of urban threats, must now confront a disturbing reality. Gilliam warns explicitly of the vulnerability faced by our rural towns. He states clearly, “There is a possibility that sleeper cells could target more rural states instead of a large city. In fact, considering the evolution of attacks by fundamental Islamic attackers we’ve seen in Israel on October 7th, 2023 and in India this year, it is possible that a similar attack could happen at a rural, outdoor entertainment venue or populated vacation spot.”
“Where these sleeper cells may be is in plain sight,” Gilliam said. “And that’s the real terrifying part of this is that putting people in place, as we’ve seen over the past four years, everyone’s scrambling because certain amounts of people could come in here and get in here.”
This chilling warning is not hypothetical fearmongering—it is grounded in reality. Since June 18, ICE has arrested more than 130 Iranian nationals illegally present in America, with a further 670 Iranians currently detained in ICE custody. Numbers like these underscore the scale of the problem—and the urgency with which our administration must respond.
President Trump understands that border security is national security. As he has tirelessly emphasized: without a secure border, we are not a secure nation. The Trump administration’s recent measures, including ramping up ICE operations and bolstering local law enforcement, demonstrate a serious commitment to rooting out threats within our own borders. But this is a fight we must wage tirelessly, relentlessly, and without compromise, given the extent of Biden-era neglect.
We must also recognize the implications of Iran’s openly hostile rhetoric and their history of terrorist attacks through proxy groups. The DHS advisory explicitly acknowledges the potential for Iranian leadership to issue religious decrees calling for violence against American targets. Rural America, with its traditionally lower security presence, is sadly an inviting target. Security at local gatherings, county fairs, music festivals, and popular vacation destinations must now be reassessed and strengthened to prevent tragedy.
We cannot afford complacency. Local law enforcement, federal agencies, and vigilant citizens must work in concert to identify suspicious activity and disrupt potential terror plots before they unfold. President Trump’s decisive actions abroad must be matched by vigilance on our home front.
The America First agenda means protecting every American citizen in every American community—from urban centers to the quietest corners of rural America. Our safety cannot be compromised by globalist policies, weak borders, or politically correct complacency.
