Following the revelation that President Joe Biden had secretly stored classified documents from his period as vice president at his Penn State University office, former Vice President Mike Pence criticized the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for applying a “double standard” to both former Presidents Joe Biden and Donald Trump.
The former vice president criticized the FBI’s “double standard” and “massive overreach” when nothing was done when about ten classified documents were discovered in an office Biden once used while serving as vice president while Trump’s Florida home was raided to see if there was any leftover documents from his stay as VP.
Pence reiterated his disapproval of the FBI’s raid on Mar-a-Lago last summer, saying he was “very concerned by that conduct,” and then he added that the “double standard” they have since established is “troubling.”
“Pence criticized the FBI’s decision to execute a search warrant at a previous president’s personal residence this summer,” saying, “I said so. It was a major overreach.”
“However, having now established that standard and now reneging on it when it was discovered that the current president of the United States had classified materials in his hands after leaving office, I think it just… I don’t know what to say right now. To me, it’s simply really annoying,” he continued.
Pence was making reference to the FBI raid on Trump’s Florida home last summer as well as a CBS News report from Monday stating that “documents marked classified” were discovered in Biden’s vice presidency office at the Penn Biden Center of Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, which is near Capitol Hill.
According to the report:
“According to two sources with knowledge of the investigation, Attorney General Merrick Garland has tasked the U.S. attorney in Chicago to examine documents marked classified that were discovered at the Penn Biden Center in DC. The sources claimed that the roughly ten documents came from President Biden’s former office at the center when he was Vice President. According to CBS News, the FBI is also taking part in the U.S. attorney’s investigation.”
“Right before the midterm elections, on November 2, Joe Biden’s personal lawyers discovered the material, according to Richard Sauber, the president’s special counsel.” According to Sauber in a statement to CBS News, “the records were found when Mr. Biden’s private lawyers were keeping files in a cupboard to prepare to evacuate the office inside the Penn Biden Center in D.C. The sources claimed that the files were contained in a folder that was inside a box along with other unclassified documents. Neither the contents of the documents nor their degree of classification was disclosed by the sources. The documents did not include nuclear secrets, according to a reliable source,” CBS News reported.
“Sauber said that the National Archives received notification of the discovery on November 2, the same day, and took ownership of the materials the next morning.”
Soon after the news was published, Trump commented on Truth Social, asking “when the FBI will raid Joe Biden’s several residences, possibly even the White House.” The former president stated that Biden’s “papers were absolutely not declassified,” despite his insistence that the records removed from his residence were “declassified.”
