Farmland Security Plan Launched, But Will It Work?

Farmland Security Plan Launched, But Will It Work?

Here’s a question that should keep you up at night. Who owns the farm next to your nearest military base?

Because there’s a decent chance the answer is Beijing. Nearly 300,000 acres of American farmland now belong to Chinese interests. And if you think that’s about agriculture, I’ve got a soybean futures contract on the Brooklyn Bridge to sell you.

The Trump administration just made its move. USDA Secretary Brook Rollins and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum of understanding this week — an unprecedented partnership between the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Defense to start treating farmland like what it actually is: a national security asset.

Farm Security Is National Security

Secretary Rollins has been beating this drum for months, and she’s right. Before Trump took office, foreign ownership of American farmland was creeping upward like mold in a basement nobody checks. Chinese buyers weren’t just picking up random plots in the middle of nowhere. They were purchasing land near military installations, defense facilities, and sensitive government sites.

Coincidence? Sure. And my grandmother was secretly a Navy SEAL.

This isn’t speculation. It’s a pattern so obvious that the only people who can’t see it are the ones choosing not to look. You don’t spend millions acquiring farmland next to an Air Force base because you’re passionate about corn yields. You do it because a well-placed piece of property with a clear line of sight to a runway is worth more than anything growing in the dirt.

The Shell Game

Here’s what makes this fight so tricky. China doesn’t walk up to the county assessor’s office waving a red flag. These purchases get buried under layers of shell companies, holding groups, agents, and legal structures designed to make ownership untraceable. By the time anyone figures out who’s actually writing the checks, the deed is done and the surveillance equipment — sorry, the “farming equipment” — is already in place.

The new USDA-DOD partnership is designed to cut through that fog. Coordinated intelligence sharing, joint oversight, and actual enforcement teeth. It’s the kind of interagency cooperation that Washington usually talks about in press releases but never actually does. This time, they’re doing it.

The Bigger Picture

America sits on some of the most productive farmland on the planet. From the breadbasket of the Midwest to California’s Central Valley, this country can grow virtually anything. That’s not just an economic advantage — it’s a strategic one. A nation that feeds itself doesn’t beg. A nation that controls its own food supply doesn’t get leveraged by foreign governments during a crisis.

Under the previous administration, food supply chains drifted increasingly toward foreign sources. American farmers watched their land values climb while their actual operations got squeezed by regulations, trade policies, and a government that seemed more interested in solar panels than soil. Meanwhile, adversarial nations were quietly accumulating the one asset you can’t manufacture, can’t digitize, and can’t replace — land.

Why This Matters to You

You don’t have to be a farmer to care about this. Every grocery store trip you make depends on American agriculture. Every military base that keeps this country safe depends on the security of the land surrounding it. When a foreign adversary owns the property next door to where we train pilots, store weapons, and coordinate national defense, that’s not a real estate transaction. That’s an intelligence operation with a deed of trust.

Trump’s team is finally connecting the dots that should have been connected years ago. Agriculture and defense aren’t separate conversations. They never were. The only people who treated them that way were the ones who benefited from nobody paying attention.

Rollins said it best: “Farm security is national security.” Five words. No hedging. No committee-approved language. Just the truth, plain enough for anyone to understand — except, apparently, the last administration.
