Vice President JD Vance recently spoke about the idea of running for president in 2028 alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The idea gained attention after President Donald Trump called a Vance-Rubio ticket “unstoppable” earlier this week. Trump made the comment while speaking to reporters on Air Force One, showing support for both men and hinting at a future political plan.
Vance talked about the topic during an interview on the New York Post podcast “Pod Force One with Miranda Devine.” He said he and Trump had discussed the possibility over lunch about six months ago. While the conversation was lighthearted, Vance admitted the idea has been on his mind. Still, he made it clear that it’s too early to focus on future elections.
“We’re only nine months into this administration,” Vance said. “We’ve done a lot of good, but there’s still a lot of work to do, especially fixing the affordability crisis that we inherited from the Biden years.” He added that right now, his focus is on helping President Trump succeed over the next three years.
This approach reflects a more traditional view of public service—doing the job well before thinking about the next political step. Vance emphasized that politics should not come before good leadership. “If we take care of business, the politics will take care of itself,” he said.
The conversation also touched on the relationship between Vance and Rubio. Devine asked whether there might be tension between the two if they both wanted to be president. Rubio is more experienced and more senior in age. He also ran for president in 2016. But Vance said there is no conflict between them. In fact, he called Rubio his “best friend in the administration” and said they work closely on many issues.
“He and I work a lot together,” Vance explained. “A lot of the good work that we’ve been able to do as an administration is because we’re all able to work together.”
This focus on teamwork and shared goals is a sign of unity in the Trump administration. In contrast to past administrations where high-level officials often clashed, the current team appears to be aligned on major issues. That could make them more effective in carrying out policy, especially as they deal with leftover problems from the previous administration.
One of the biggest challenges the Trump administration faces is the high cost of living. Vance mentioned that the White House has started to “chip away” at the affordability crisis left by the Biden administration, but there is still more work to do. Tackling this issue will be key to the administration’s success and could shape how voters feel in the next election.
The idea of a Vance-Rubio ticket also shows how the Republican Party is planning for the future. Both men are young, energetic, and popular with different parts of the conservative base. Vance, known for his focus on working-class issues, and Rubio, with his experience in foreign policy, could make a strong team. But for now, both say they are focused on doing their current jobs well.
Vance ended the interview by saying he doesn’t wake up thinking about how to become president. Instead, he thinks about how to do a good job as vice president. He said Rubio does the same in his role as secretary of state. This kind of attitude, if it holds, may help the administration avoid distractions and stay focused on its goals.
While the 2028 election is still years away, early signals like this one show that planning is already happening behind the scenes. For now, though, the focus remains on solving problems, not campaigning. That might be a welcome change for Americans who are tired of non-stop political drama and just want results.
