Los Angeles has called in the cavalry—literally—as the California National Guard has been deployed to combat the chaos caused by wildfires ravaging the metro area. With destruction mounting, the troops are tasked with preventing looting, assisting emergency responders, and maintaining order in an increasingly unstable environment.
The fires, which have already claimed 10 lives and destroyed nearly 10,000 structures, continue to rage, fueled by dry desert winds. Estimates of the economic damage range from $135 to $150 billion, and while no riots have erupted (yet), reports of looting have added another layer of crisis to an already dire situation.
California Governor Gavin Newsom made his usual grandstanding appearance, declaring, “To those who would seek to take advantage of evacuated communities, let me be clear: looting will not be tolerated.” That’s rich coming from the same guy whose policies have left the state’s crime rates soaring. Now he’s banking on 400 National Guard troops to clean up the mess—a band-aid for a gaping wound his administration helped create.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna confirmed that at least 20 looters have been arrested so far. “You will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” he warned at a press conference, sounding tough but coming from a state where many criminals barely see jail time, it’s hard to take these threats seriously.
Kathryn Barger, chair of LA County’s Board of Supervisors, also condemned the opportunistic thefts, saying, “Shame on those who are preying on our residents during this time of crisis.” While she’s right to call out the looters, perhaps some of that shame should be directed at the state’s failed leadership, which has done little to prevent these disasters from spiraling out of control.
Let’s not forget, California’s fire problem isn’t just a natural disaster—it’s a policy disaster. Decades of mismanagement, anti-logging regulations, and environmental policies that prioritize “protecting nature” over human lives have turned the state into a tinderbox. And when things inevitably go up in flames, the Democrats in charge are quick to blame “climate change” instead of taking accountability.
Under strong, America-first leadership, this kind of chaos wouldn’t be allowed to happen. Instead of pandering to environmental extremists, real leaders would focus on practical solutions like forest management, water storage, and infrastructure improvements. The left’s endless excuses won’t stop these fires, but responsible, conservative policies just might.
