The 2024 GOP campaign said in a statement that the show had admitted to changing Harris’s speech to make her sound more articulate and “less incoherent.” They also asked that the full transcript be made public by the show.
“60 Minutes just admitted that they did exactly what Trump said they would do. A different answer from a different part of her answer was added to make Kamala Harris sound less confused than she really was. What they said is not a denial; it’s an admission that they did exactly what was said,” Trump’s team said on Sunday.
“This is yet another example of how unfairly biased 60 Minutes is, and how right President Trump was to turn down their offer to be hacked for fake news. Give us the transcript!”
Following the charges, CBS News quickly issued a statement refuting the Trump campaign’s claims that the show had allegedly lied to its viewers.
“Former President Trump says that 60 Minutes lied about how they edited our interview with Vice President Kamala Harris on October 7. What you said is not true,” the statement started.
“60 Minutes showed a part of our interview to Face the Nation, and they used a longer part of her answer than what was shown on 60 Minutes. The same question. The same answer. But a different part of the answer. Whether it’s a conversation with a politician or a movie star, we try to be clear, correct, and on point. Part of her answer on 60 Minutes was shorter, which made room for other topics in a 21-minute piece that covered a lot of ground. ”
They went on to say that Trump “canceled his interview with ’60 Minutes,’ and the vice president went in its place.” The Trump team, on the other hand, has said that it never officially accepted the interview first place.
