Secret Service Bungled Trump Assassination Attempt: Senate Reports

What happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, was more than a near-tragedy—it was a national disgrace. The Secret Service, the agency trusted with protecting the life of the President of the United States, failed—utterly and completely. On July 13, 2024, President Donald Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt. And now, thanks to two damning Senate reports, we know exactly why: a cascade of preventable failures, stunning negligence, and a bureaucracy so tangled in red tape and internal confusion that it left the leader of the free world vulnerable to a rooftop sniper.

Senators Chuck Grassley and Rand Paul, who led the investigations, didn’t mince words. They called it “inexcusable negligence” and laid out a chilling timeline of government dysfunction. Let’s be clear: these weren’t unfortunate accidents or isolated slip-ups. This was systemic failure at the highest levels of presidential protection. From ignored intelligence to technology breakdowns and denied security requests, the Secret Service abandoned its mission when it mattered most.

Start with the ignored warnings. Ten days before the rally, the Secret Service received classified intelligence of a possible threat against Trump—potentially tied to Iran. But thanks to their “siloed” information-sharing process, the field agents actually responsible for Trump’s security were left in the dark. How on earth does an agency that specializes in protective service keep intel about a potential international threat under wraps from its own security detail?

Then came the resource denials. Trump’s security team repeatedly asked for key assets—anti-drone systems, a Counter Assault Team liaison, better communication with local SWAT—and were told no. Why? Because the agency had “already allocated” resources to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. In other words, they gambled with Trump’s life to save resources for events that hadn’t even happened yet.

Even worse, the anti-drone system that was eventually deployed failed hours before the rally. The agent tasked with fixing it had neither the training nor the tools to get it working quickly. During the window of that failure, the would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, flew a drone directly over the fairgrounds—completely undetected. That drone likely helped him scout the area and finalize his attack strategy. Let that sink in: a drone was in the skies over a presidential event, and the Secret Service had no idea.

But perhaps the most absurd failure of all was the sheer breakdown in basic communication. A Trump campaign staffer asked the advance team not to block a rooftop view with farm equipment to allow for better press photos. The Secret Service complied—without adjusting their sniper coverage. That one decision created the exact line-of-sight Crooks needed to fire a round that struck President Trump by the ear. A last-second head turn saved his life. That’s not just a breakdown. That’s incompetence on a historic scale.

Sen. Paul summed it up perfectly: “The United States Secret Service failed to act on credible intelligence, failed to coordinate with local law enforcement, and failed to prevent an attack that nearly took the life of a then-former president.” Grassley added that the purpose of the reports is to “offer a clear path forward.” That’s a start—but it’s not enough.

Heads need to roll. Accountability must be swift and severe. Americans deserve to know who denied those security requests, who sat on that intelligence, and who signed off on a security plan that left the President exposed. This wasn’t just a lapse in protocol—it was a betrayal of duty. And with President Trump now back in the White House, every American should be demanding reform, not just apologies.

The Secret Service’s mission is simple: protect the President at all costs. In Butler, they failed. And if we don’t fix this now, we may not get a second chance.
