Salesforce CEO Apologizes After National Guard Suggestion Fallout

Marc Benioff, the CEO of Salesforce, is facing strong criticism after he first supported, then apologized for, the idea of sending the National Guard to San Francisco. His comments sparked backlash from political leaders and activists on the left, raising questions about public safety, political loyalty, and the future of free speech in America’s cities.

Benioff is known as a major Democratic donor. He has supported politicians like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Kamala Harris. That’s why many were surprised when he recently told the New York Times that President Donald Trump’s idea to send the National Guard to San Francisco might be a good one. He said the city had become unsafe and that something needed to be done. His comments came just after the Dreamforce tech conference, which was held safely in downtown San Francisco.

Critics quickly responded. California Governor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco city leaders said the National Guard was not wanted or needed. They claimed that crime in the city is going down and that local government is handling the situation. Activists and media voices on the left accused Benioff of siding with Trump and of supporting federal intervention in a liberal city.

The reaction from the left was swift and harsh. Ron Conway, a tech investor and close ally of Kamala Harris, resigned from the board of the Salesforce Foundation. He said that Benioff’s views no longer matched the values of the organization. Conway has donated large sums to Democratic causes and was a major financial backer of Harris’ failed 2024 presidential campaign.

Feeling the pressure, Benioff issued a public apology. He said he was sorry for suggesting the National Guard should be sent in. He wrote that he had listened to local voices and now believed that San Francisco could handle its own problems. He said he wanted to work with city and state leaders instead of calling for federal action. Benioff also said his earlier comments came from a place of caution, not politics.

But the damage may already be done. Some people are now questioning Benioff’s political loyalties. Others see his apology as a sign that free speech is under attack from within his own party. David Sacks, a tech investor and adviser in the Trump administration, said Benioff would be welcome in the Republican Party. He wrote on social media that cancel culture is over and that the GOP is now the party of inclusion.

President Trump also joined the conversation. He called San Francisco “a mess” and repeated that the National Guard might be needed to restore order. Elon Musk, another tech leader, agreed with that view. He called downtown San Francisco a “drug zombie apocalypse.”

This situation highlights a deeper problem in American politics. When a well-known Democrat like Benioff supports a Trump policy, he is attacked by his own side. That sends a message: if you step out of line, you will be punished. In this case, Benioff gave an honest opinion about public safety and was forced to backtrack. This raises concerns about whether leaders in business and politics can speak freely if their views do not match the party line.

The debate also touches on states’ rights. President Trump has used the National Guard in other cities where local leaders failed to control violence. Some believe that federal help is needed when cities can’t protect their own citizens. Others say the federal government should stay out and let cities solve their own problems.

In the end, Benioff’s reversal is about more than one man’s opinion. It shows how divided the country still is over issues of safety, freedom, and who gets to lead. While Benioff tried to calm the storm with his apology, the larger political fight is still going strong. And as long as public safety remains a real concern in cities like San Francisco, the debate over how to fix it—and who should be in charge—will not go away.
