Running mate Nicole Shanahan of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (I) has said that their 2024 presidential campaign is considering two possibilities, one of which is “join[ing] forces” with Republican contender and former president Donald Trump.
In a Tuesday interview with Tom Bilyeu for the podcast “Impact Theory,” Shanahan stated that the campaign is thinking about sticking in the race in an effort to “establish ourselves” as a third-party alternative by garnering more than 5% of the popular vote.
“We are considering two alternatives,” Shanahan said. “The first is staying in and creating that new party, but we risk having Kamala Harris and Walz as president because we get Trump votes or more votes from him.”
She then said, “Or we walk away right now and team up with Donald Trump.” “We leave that behind and provide our base with an explanation for our decision.”
Not simple. It was not a simple choice, Shanahan continued.
Shanahan said earlier in the interview that she thought “Big Pharma” was Trump’s “Achilles heel” during his first term as president.
She remarked, “I don’t think he realized that it would harm his entire legacy and reputation as much as it did.” Shanahan did, however, note that she had just heard “really positive” things from the Trump campaign.
Subsequently, Bilyeu questioned Shanahan over worries that RFK Jr. is only a “spoiler candidate” for Trump.
“I did not invest tens of millions of dollars to run as a spoiler candidate; we did not launch this campaign.” Shanahan said, “I invested tens of millions of dollars to win, to heal this nation, and to do the right thing.”
She said that the Kennedy-Shanahan ticket was the target of a Democratic National Committee PAC, which was “turning us into a spoiler.”
We’d prefer not to give anything away. Our goal was a victory. We desired a fair trial. That was not doable for us because of the DNC,” Shanahan said. They have sued us in every state, employed law enforcement against us, kept us off stages, shadow-banned us, and blacklisted us. They even infiltrated our campaign with insiders in order to sabotage it and give us legitimate legal problems.
The level of sabotage they have unleashed on us is astounding. We’re still discovering fresh ways that they have undermined us, she continued. I was genuinely hoping for a fair election. And I held the belief that the America I had sworn loyalty to as a young child was not the America we live in today. This has nothing to do with the Republican Party’s efforts to eliminate us. The Democratic Party is solely to blame for our downfall, and I regret ever having assisted them.
Following the broadcast of the podcast episode, Kennedy issued the following statement: “As always, I am eager to engage with leaders of any political party to achieve the causes I have supported for 40 years in my career and in this campaign.”
Kennedy went on, “They include stopping the war machine, defending free speech, eliminating corporate power in politics, eradicating hazardous pollution from the environment, and reversing the pandemic of chronic illnesses.”
During the discussion, Bilyeu also inquired about Shanahan’s consideration of a California gubernatorial bid should their presidential campaign come to an end.
“As of now, I’m not sure,” she answered. “To challenge this dynastic lineage, I would be pleased to endorse an excellent candidate for California governor.”
“I would also think about running,” Shanahan said. “I would want to participate in California.”
“I believe that California might serve as a fantastic paradigm for rescuing the disastrous position that the country is now in. We serve as the federal government’s model for the rest of the country,” she said.
The Democratic Party’s Lis Smith issued a statement about Shanahan’s most recent interview.
Smith told CNBC that “Nicole Shanahan isn’t even trying to be a genuine VP contender anymore.” “In just one interview, she suggested RFK Jr. as Secretary of the Health and Human Services Department under a Trump administration, talked about her desire to run for California governor in 2026, acknowledged that the Kennedy-Shanahan campaign has no chance of winning, and suggested working with Trump to unseat Vice President Harris.”
“We have argued from the start of this election that RFK Jr. is nothing more than a Donald Trump spoiler, and we’re happy that his running partner is now acknowledging that,” Smith added.
