Boys in their final year of high school are nearly twice as likely to identify as conservatives than as liberals, according to a University of Michigan study. However, girls in the twelfth grade are much more likely than boys to identify as liberal than conservative.
According to The Hill, partisan divisions that were previously reasonably close have widened on the Monitoring the Future poll, which is regarded as a scientific project that stretches back to the 1970s.
Between 2014 and 2016, the proportions of conservative and liberal high school senior males were almost the same, both hovering around 19%. By 2022, the percentage had changed to 23% for conservatives, which was a decrease of three points from the previous year.
Since that 2016 benchmark, the percentage of males in grade twelve who identify as liberal has fallen to 13%.
The percentages for conservatives in 2020–2023 are the highest that have been recorded since the early 1990s, even though they have mostly consistently remained around 20%, with the exception of 1998–2002.
However, since the study’s first results, which were 25%, in 1975, there has been a declining tendency in the proportion of males who identify as liberals.
Young girls, however, are another story; in recent years, liberal identification among senior girls has surged to over 30%, while conservative identification among girls has decreased to almost a third at 12%.
Similar patterns were found in the writings of the University of San Diego psychology instructor and novelist Jean Twenge.
She portrayed a much clearer difference between the sexes in her novel “Generations.” Her graphic, which was shared on Reddit, shows that 31% of females and 65% of guys identify as conservative, respectively.
A young guy, Tyler, a student at American University, stated to the publication that despite having been a conservative in high school, attending post-secondary school actually contributed to making him more liberal.
He chuckled, “What influenced me was I went to the most liberal institution. If I had known that, I doubt I would have gone.”
Tyler said that he dislikes the term “liberal” because it has come to represent weakness in the eyes of conservatives. He stated that he believed other young males had similar sentiments.
