According to a recent study, more than 60% of independents think that we should deport the majority of illegal immigrants who are already living in the country.
With 61 percent saying they think the US should deport illegal immigrants, the Reuters/Ipsos survey revealed that a sizable majority of independents support the proposal. The proposal garnered even more support from registered Republicans, with 85% expressing their support for deporting the majority or all undocumented immigrants currently residing in the country.
Former Republican President Donald Trump has made mass deportations a centerpiece of his campaign platform, and his aides are working to draft executive orders and legislative measures in anticipation of a more extensive immigration crackdown.
With just 26% of registered Democrats supporting the proposal, they were the only party to state they were against deporting illegal immigrants. Although the public seems to support the expulsion of illegal immigrants, the survey also revealed that 54% of respondents are against the use of detention centers to house illegal immigrants prior to their deportation.
The online survey, which included 3,208 registered voters nationwide as a sample, is one of several recent opinion pieces about immigration that may be problematic for President Joe Biden.
According to two polls, the majority of Americans support increased deportations, erecting a wall on the southern border, and punishing companies that recruit illegal immigrants. Only 36% of people approve of Biden’s performance on immigration.
During his tenure, the Democratic President managed an unprecedented crisis at the southern border, overseeing over 9.5 million interactions nationwide and an estimated 1.7 million illegal immigration escapees. According to polls, Americans now trust Trump more than they do Biden when it comes to immigration, and just 20% of respondents think that the US now controls its borders.
The number of unlawful northern border crossings in the United States increased to a record high in 2023, and statistics from the 2024 fiscal year show that this year will likely see even more illegal crossings. In the 39 months of Biden’s administration, the number of people born outside of the United States has also climbed by 6.6 million, mostly due to illegal immigration.
