Impeached Homeland Security chief Alejandro Mayorkas has named two establishment supporters to lead a 45-day “independent examination” of the murder attempt on former President Donald Trump.
The announcement of Mayorkas’ appointments coincides with growing Republican criticism of his agency for not stopping the attempted assassination of Donald Trump.
As a result of the extremely inadequate security at Trump’s speech in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he suffered a minor gunshot wound, there have been increasing calls for Kimberly Cheatle’s resignation as Chief of Staff to Mayorkas.
Janet Napolitano, an attorney with Democratic affiliations who won the 2002 governorship of Arizona, is the principal appointee. She backed Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in his 2008 presidential campaign, leading to her appointment as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which manages the Secret Service.
In order to implement Obama’s legally illegitimate DACA amnesty for younger illegal aliens, Napolitano collaborated closely with Mayorkas in 2012. In 2021, Napolitano pleaded with the Senate to approve Mayorkas’ appointment to the DHS.
Also appointed by Mayorkas was Frances Townsend, a homeland adviser to President George W. Bush. She and other establishment elites signed a statement objecting to Trump’s victory in 2016.
“Based on Mr. Trump’s own remarks, we may conclude that he would abuse his power as president to take actions that would weaken American security and damage our reputation abroad.”
Mayorkas’s employment is in jeopardy because of his refusal to stand up for Trump and the mounting evidence of agency dishonesty.
For instance, agency representatives said on Saturday that they had consistently turned down Trump’s demands for increased security, which runs counter to Mayorkas’s claims made on Monday following the attempted assassination.
In July 2021, The New York Times reported:
According to Mr. Mayorkas, who made the statement on Monday, “The claim of refused requests is a frivolous and irresponsible remark, and it is one that is completely false.”
“However, Mr. [Anthony] Guglielmi stated on Saturday that the organization has, in fact, turned down certain requests for Secret Service assistance during campaigns. However, he stated that the organization frequently works with state and local law enforcement to assist federal protection, as was the case at the Trump rally’s location, the Butler Farm Show grounds.” House Speaker Mike Johnson told CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Sunday that he had spoken with Mr. Mayorkas a few hours after the incident and asked him “basic questions” about the security measures in place for the gathering. Mayorkas was ignorant about the use of drones for security at the time, according to Mr. Johnson. “Some very basic things, that is.”
Mayorkas unveiled two more appointments on Sunday.
Mark Filip was the George W. Bush administration’s deputy attorney general, and David B. Mitchell was the former Maryland superintendent of police.
“We are committed to finding out what happened on July 13,” Mayorkas asserted in his statement on Sunday. “I am grateful to the members of this independent review, who will use their decades of expertise in law enforcement to this important investigation.”
In February, the House impeached Mayorkas because he disregarded the country’s border regulations. In a series of party-line votes in April, the Senate dismissed the allegations.
