House Speaker Mike Johnson says Republicans in Congress are focused on making life more affordable for Americans. In a recent interview, he outlined several steps lawmakers are taking to lower the cost of living. He said the goal is to support President Trump’s “affordability agenda,” which includes cutting taxes, reducing regulations, and fixing problems in healthcare and energy.
Johnson admitted that time is short before Congress wraps up its work for the year. But he said Republicans are working fast to pass laws and end old rules from the Biden administration that they believe made life more expensive. “We’re still doing regulatory reform to end the Biden-era regulations,” Johnson said.
One of the main ideas driving this effort is what Johnson called the “affordability agenda.” He said Americans are struggling with high prices in many areas—like groceries, energy, and housing. He pointed to healthcare as one example where costs have continued to rise. “Healthcare is part of that,” he said. “But it’s just the costs across the board.”
Johnson blamed former President Joe Biden’s economic policies for the high inflation seen during his time in office. When Biden entered the White House in 2021, inflation started to rise quickly. Prices for basic goods, like food and gas, climbed faster than wages. A study from Texas A&M University showed that, over Biden’s four years, the cost of living went up more than most people’s paychecks.
Johnson said voters responded to this by electing Republicans to take back control of Congress and the White House. But he added that fixing the economy takes time. “The economy is a very complex thing, you don’t flip a switch and just change it all in one week,” he said.
One major effort from the new Republican leadership is the “One Big, Beautiful Bill Act,” which has been renamed the “working families’ tax cut.” This law includes several tax cuts meant to put more money back into people’s pockets. For example, tips and overtime pay are now tax-free. Seniors also get lower taxes under the new plan.
Republicans believe this will help spark an economic boom. Johnson said that by early next year, Americans will start to feel the benefits. He pointed to comments from Treasury Secretary Bessent, who said the economy should grow more quickly as the new policies take hold.
The plan also includes tax cuts for businesses and investors. Johnson said this will encourage job creation and innovation. He argued that when entrepreneurs and small business owners face fewer taxes and rules, they are more likely to hire workers and grow the economy.
Another area of focus is healthcare. Republicans say the current system, known as Obamacare, is broken. They are working on a new healthcare package to lower premiums and give Americans more choices. Johnson didn’t give many details yet, but said the plan will be aimed at fixing the “sky-high premiums” Americans are paying today.
Energy is also a top issue. Several House committees are writing bills to lower energy prices. One goal is to fix the permitting process for new energy projects. Right now, it can take years to get approval to build things like pipelines or power plants. Republicans want to speed that up to help bring down utility costs.
Overall, Speaker Johnson says the GOP’s main goal is to make life more affordable. He believes the price increases under the Biden administration were the result of too much government spending and too many regulations. Now, Republicans are aiming to reverse that by cutting taxes, simplifying rules, and giving more power back to the people.
Whether these efforts will succeed depends on how quickly the new laws take effect and how Americans respond. But for now, Republicans are betting that their affordability agenda will help ease the pressure many families are feeling.
