Mike Pence, the former vice president, has a strategy to stop “populism” from growing within the Republican Party.
Under the auspices of his own political advocacy firm, Advancing American Freedom, Pence is initiating a $20 million endeavor known as the “American Solutions Project.” Pence identifies significantly more as a social and moral conservative than, say, Donald Trump.
Pence alerted RealClearPolitics to the dangers of “movements” and “personalities” influencing the conservative agenda in a statement.
“Conservative values that have withstood the test of time became the foundation of our country. The Constitution and our great American experiment must remain steadfast in the face of movements and personalities, adhering to the time-tested values that have made America powerful, affluent, and free.”
Pence’s work is a “three-pronged strategy,” with the main goal being to “correct the right’s trend towards populism,” according to The Hill, which was able to secure a copy of the plan.
According to The Hill:
“The first will be to mold political majorities by developing a platform for policies that candidates can support in order to “reverse the Left’s embrace of socialism and the Right’s drift toward populism.”
“The second portion focuses on supporting conservative legislation and furthering Pence’s policy goals, which include fighting China, restoring U.S. leadership around the globe, cutting government spending, and promoting free trade.”
“The project’s third and final phase aims to defend conservative ideas, such as small government.”
“Advancing American Freedom will be able to hire more people, develop its facilities, and publicize its initiatives thanks to the $20 million funding. The committee will include prominent conservative benefactor Art Pope, chair of the Catholic University board of trustees Victor Smith, and former president of the Heritage Foundation Ed Feulner, as RealClearPolitics originally reported.”
The proposal does not specifically reference Donald Trump, but it will surely be seen as an attempt to weaken his hold on the Republican Party and the conservative movement in general. Additionally, it will try to move the agenda in favor of the more socially conservative viewpoint that Pence and other such personalities represent.
After the events of January 6, 2021, when the former vice president turned down his boss’s request to protest the certification of the disputed results of the 2020 presidential election, Trump and Pence’s relationship notoriously fell apart.
Since then, Pence has made an unsuccessful attempt to win the presidency, only to have the Republican opposition crush him. In an effort to remove the former president, he has also charged that he put his family at risk on January 6.
At a gathering last year, Pence declared, “President Trump was mistaken.” I didn’t have the authority to void the election. Additionally, I believe that history will hold Donald Trump responsible for his careless remarks that day, which put my family and everyone else in the Capitol at risk.
In the meantime, the hunt for Trump’s running mate is already under way, with his hold on the nomination virtually certain. Mike Pence is not going to be involved in that discussion.
