Feds Target Sanctuary Cities with Immigration Crackdown

Tom Homan, who is helping lead border policy under President Trump, says the federal government is focusing efforts on sanctuary cities. Sanctuary cities are places where local officials do not always cooperate with federal immigration agents. These cities often refuse to hold illegal immigrants for deportation, even if they are arrested for crimes. Homan says this puts public safety at risk.

In a recent interview on Fox Business Network, Homan said, “Damn straight — we’re going to flood the zone.” He explained that most problems with illegal immigration happen in sanctuary cities. He pointed out that states like Florida and Texas, which cooperate with federal immigration officers, don’t face the same issues. In those states, local law enforcement works closely with immigration agents to remove illegal immigrants who have committed crimes.

Homan said that in sanctuary cities, illegal immigrants are often released from jail instead of being turned over to federal agents. This, he says, leads to more danger for the community, for law enforcement, and even for the illegal immigrants themselves. “You would think they’d let us in the jail to arrest that public safety threat in the safety and security of a jail,” he said. Instead, when immigrants are released, officers are forced to arrest them on the streets, which can be more dangerous and unpredictable.

To address the problem, Homan said the federal government is sending more resources to these cities. The administration plans to hire 10,000 new immigration officers, and most of them will be sent to sanctuary cities. “We’re going to send our firefighters to the biggest fires,” he said. “And those fires are in the sanctuary cities.”

This strategy is a big change from the past. Under the previous administration, federal immigration enforcement was limited in many areas. Local governments were often allowed to set their own rules about how much they would work with federal agents. But now, the Trump administration is taking a stronger approach, arguing that federal immigration law must be enforced across the country, whether cities agree or not.

This has led to debates over states’ rights and local control. Some city leaders argue that they should be able to set their own policies on immigration, especially if they believe those policies help build trust between police and immigrant communities. They say that if immigrants fear being turned over to federal agents, they may not report crimes or cooperate with police.

But supporters of the federal plan argue that public safety should come first. They believe that cities should not be allowed to protect people who are in the country illegally, especially if those individuals have committed crimes. They say it is the federal government’s job to enforce immigration law and protect national security.

This debate also ties into broader questions about how the U.S. handles immigration, border security, and law enforcement. President Trump has made it clear that stricter immigration enforcement is a top priority. His administration argues that illegal immigration strains public services, increases crime, and weakens the rule of law.

The decision to target sanctuary cities shows how the federal government plans to focus its efforts where it believes the problems are greatest. By sending more officers and resources to these areas, the administration hopes to lower crime, improve public safety, and send a message that immigration laws will be enforced.

As the 2025 political season moves forward, immigration policy remains one of the key issues for both the federal government and local communities. The battle between sanctuary cities and federal immigration officials highlights the ongoing struggle between local control and national law. Whether this new approach will bring the results the administration hopes for is something the country will be watching closely in the months ahead.
