There hasn’t been a single policy talk at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois after three nights. The only exception was abortion, which got a lot of attention on the third night with several speeches.
Like the candidate, the conference has not talked about what Democrats would do if voters gave the Democratic Party power. Instead, it has focused on attacking former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), by making them look like cruel people from the past. People often chant, “We’re not going back!” without saying where they want to go instead.
People have said bad things about Vance because he told Fox News host Tucker Carlson in 2021, before he was even running for office, that “the whole future of the Democrats is ruled by people without children.” Democrats say that’s an attack on women who are single, who are the most loyal voters for the party, or on women who have tried to have children but haven’t been able to.
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is something that Trump supports, but Democrats see the GOP as a threat to the process.
Republicans have been fighting “Project 2025,” a conservative think tank’s policy plan, but Democrats haven’t talked about policy issues other than reproduction. They haven’t talked about the economy, foreign policy, or the border either. They have tried to make Harris look like a tough-on-crime lawyer or a good leader when it comes to keeping the border safe, but to do that, they have ignored or skewed her record instead of talking about what she would do as president.
At one point, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota said he would talk about policy, but all he did was say a bunch of empty platitudes:
“She should explain what she would do as president before we ask them to vote for her. I believe we owe them that. If you’re from a middle-class family or trying to get into the middle class, Kamala Harris is going to cut your taxes. Copy and paste this part, save it, and send it to family members who aren’t sure yet. If the cost of your prescription drugs makes you feel squished, Kamala will fight Big Pharma. If you want to buy a house, Kamala Harris will help you get one for less money. Kamala Harris will fight for your right to live the life you want, no matter who you are, because that’s what we want for ourselves and our friends.”
They haven’t come up with a plan to cut taxes, and President Joe Biden has said for years that he has already fought “Big Pharma.” A nod to Harris’s housing plan was the only hint at real policy. Harris wants to give first-time home buyers, including likely illegal immigrants, $25,000 for down payments. Harris couldn’t say where the money would come from when asked. Instead, he said there would be a “return on investment.”
When asked about policy, Democrats have been fuzzy. When asked what Kamala Harris would do first as president, Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY) said “Ukraine,” as if policy wasn’t important. At the state level as well, people try to avoid following the rules. Antonio Villaraigosa, who is running for governor of California in 2026, told Breitbart News that he wants to “bring people together” for the state.
Even though Harris has been running for office for more than a month, her campaign website still doesn’t have any policies. On Wednesday, the Trump campaign made fun of this by launching kamala2024policies.com, which lists Harris’s past views.
Kamala Harris’s winning speech will happen on the fourth night of the gathering. She could finally lay out her policy plans. As of now, the gathering has been mostly about abortion and former President Trump.
