During a recent interview, Republican presidential contender Ron DeSantis declared that he would order the military to execute cartel members who attempt to breach the southern border wall if elected to be the country’s next leader.
The remarks made by DeSantis while in an interview with CBS News anchor Norah O’Donnell on the “CBS Evening News” follow his declaration during the first GOP presidential primary debate in which he stated he would deploy American special troops into Mexico in order to eradicate the cartels.
In the course of the interview, DeSantis stated, “We’re going to lean in and protect our country.” He was talking about how he had seen experts fix parts of the border wall in the state of Arizona where the gangs had carved through steel supports.
According to DeSantis, the military will be permitted to use lethal force to shut down any attempts by cartel members to breach portions of the border wall.
DeSantis stated that procedures would need to be set up in order to decide the parameters of engagement for when the armed forces may use force.
“If you find a woman with a little baby, she’s not a member of the cartel, and there won’t be permission to just shoot her,” DeSantis stated. “But if someone is there with a backpack and trying to break through the wall, you know that shows hostile intent, and you possess every right to do something in that case.”
DeSantis stated that it would probably only take a couple of times for this to take place before the gangs are pushed to change how they do things.
According to the governor of Florida, there is room for debate over the precise strategies the military would employ within Mexico to take down the cartels, but it is certain that some degree of flexibility in the allocation of resources would be needed.
“The truth is that they are flooding our border, doing things like sex trafficking, human trafficking, and bringing in huge amounts of drugs,” he said. “I mean, what these people are doing is hurting and invading our country. The question is whether we should just give up. And do we say that we can’t do anything about it? Or does the boss move things forward? I can tell you for sure that the troops will be at the border. I mean, if they attempt to break through this wall, we are going to be able to stop them with deadly force.”
