According to Fox News, many House Democrats are calling for reparations and a national apology for slavery.
The organization presented legislation to establish a commission whose members would examine slavery in America, and one Democrat feels the country can confront the issue, according to the site on Thursday:
“Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, and 52 other House Democrats introduced the bill last week in an attempt to keep the issue alive. Her proposal, which was reviewed by the House Judiciary Committee during the previous Democratic-led Congress, is unlikely to be taken up in the Republican-led 118th Congress.”
“While some have attempted to divert the importance of these debates by concentrating on individual monetary compensation, the true issue is whether and how this nation can come to terms with the legacy of slavery that continues to poison present culture,” she added. “Through news, legislation, resolutions, and lawsuits, we are getting closer to making greater progress in the reparations movement.”
Meanwhile, social media users voiced their opinions on the matter, one person saying, “I’m sorry is there anyone in this nation that truly had a slave? I never did, and I never intend to.”
With another saying, “how is it ethical to take money from individuals who have never held slaves and give it to those who have never been slaves?”
Jackson Lee stated that monetary restitution should be considered, saying that black Americans are still experiencing the economic impacts of slavery.
According to the Fox article, the law does not include a proposal for payment or a national apology, but instead leaves those options to the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans.
Meanwhile, comedian and actor Faizon Love believes the reparations money planned by the state of California for its black inhabitants would be squandered.
During an interview, he slammed the concept of reparations, saying, “Fuck that. You know why that is a trick, man? Because that money will be returned to motherfucking Mercedes Benz and Cadillac.”
A California committee is looking at reparations, which could mean $200,000 in reparations for each individual who can prove they are descendants from African American slaves.
“The state has been contemplating reparations since 2020 under a measure enacted by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) that year,” according to the newspaper.
The state’s Reparations Task Force chair recently stated that black citizens should each receive $1 million and that homeless black people should be first in line.
