Democrats Target Noem Amid Texas Flood Fallout

When disaster strikes, every second counts. Lives depend on immediate action, and the American people have every right to expect swift, decisive leadership from those entrusted with their safety. Yet today, Democrats are once again seizing on tragedy to score cheap political points, this time aiming their arrows at Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, over FEMA’s response to the devastating floods in Texas.

Representative Jared Moskowitz, who previously oversaw emergency management in Florida, has called for an investigation into FEMA’s handling of the situation, specifically targeting a cost-control policy implemented by Secretary Noem. According to Moskowitz, Noem’s requirement that all FEMA purchases and grants over $100,000 receive direct approval from her office allegedly hampered the agency’s ability to respond swiftly. Moskowitz claims this deviation from normal FEMA protocol may have worsened the disaster’s impact, which tragically claimed at least 120 lives, with more than 170 still missing.

But let’s cut through the political theater and examine the facts. The Department of Homeland Security quickly countered Moskowitz’s accusations, noting that initial search-and-rescue operations in Texas utilized other assets already in place, negating the immediate need for FEMA’s direct authorization. Far from hindering operations, Noem’s policy was intended to ensure accountability and efficiency in how taxpayer dollars are spent during emergencies.

Democrats, ever eager to exploit tragedy, conveniently ignore the broader context. FEMA has long been criticized, often rightly, for wasteful spending and bureaucratic inefficiencies. Secretary Noem’s effort to impose responsible oversight on spending during disasters is precisely the type of reform conservative voters demanded. It’s about ensuring aid reaches victims quickly without lining the pockets of contractors or bureaucrats. Nevertheless, Moskowitz calls this policy ineffective, deliberately ignoring that unchecked federal spending often leads to fraud and waste, undermining the very efficiency he claims to champion.

In his letter, Moskowitz criticized the $100,000 threshold as ineffective in disaster contexts, which impaired FEMA’s real-time response capability. The DHS claimed that FEMA’s deployment was swift and emphasized reforming the agency to lead disaster responses effectively at the state level.

Let’s not forget, states and local communities are best positioned to lead during emergencies. FEMA’s role should supplement—not supplant—state-led efforts. Secretary Noem understands this principle deeply, having previously served as governor of South Dakota. Her policy reflects a conservative commitment to federalism, ensuring states maintain responsibility and oversight in managing local disasters, with FEMA acting as a supportive partner, not a bloated federal overlord.

Moreover, Moskowitz’s targeting of Secretary Noem reeks of partisan opportunism. Democrats are desperate to discredit conservative leadership precisely because it challenges their preferred narrative—that only a massive, unchecked federal bureaucracy can effectively handle disaster response. Conservatives know better: Time and again, we’ve witnessed federal agencies bogged down by red tape and inefficiency. Noem’s proactive approach to financial accountability is a breath of fresh air, precisely what FEMA needs.

Of course, accountability matters. If mistakes were made, we should acknowledge them and improve. But launching a full-scale congressional investigation into FEMA’s Texas response at this early stage smacks more of partisan grandstanding than genuine concern for victims. Moskowitz’s demands for a congressional inquiry divert critical resources and attention from where they’re needed most—helping the Texans who remain displaced, grieving, and recovering.

As President Trump prepares to visit Texas and assess damage firsthand, we must prioritize real solutions over political theater. Conservative leadership demands accountability and transparency from government agencies, especially in times of crisis. Secretary Noem’s reforms are precisely the step forward FEMA needs to become more efficient, more accountable, and more responsive to American citizens in desperate moments.

Let’s push back against this cynical attempt by Democrats to politicize tragedy. The American people deserve better than partisan gamesmanship. They deserve strong, accountable leaders like Kristi Noem, who understand that responsible governance and smart oversight are not obstacles but essential tools in serving the nation effectively in times of crisis.
