For many on the left, Fran Lebowitz’s writing confirms what more and more people already think: the Supreme Court is not real and should be gotten rid of as it is now.
Fran Lebowitz pushed for President Biden to “dissolve the U.S. Supreme Court” on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher on Friday. This would allow the executive branch to take control of the legal branch, which is against the U.S. Constitution.
It surprised the host Bill Maher that she had such a strong opinion. He looked shocked and then joked, “Good to see you are moderate.”
Lebowitz said the Supreme Court is a “disgrace” and it is “totally his,” a reference to Donald Trump, who was president from 2017 to 2019.
“This court is so shameful that it should not even be called a court,” she said, getting loud cheers from the crowd in Maher’s studio. She joked, “It is an insult to Motown.”
“In essence, it’s a harem. It is Trump’s gang,” she said.
Lebowitz was talking about the high court’s decision in July on presidential immunity. The court ruled 6-3 that presidents are not completely immune from criminal charges for things they do as president.
Many people saw the decision as a big win for Trump in his ongoing fight against how the Biden-Harris administration used the Justice Dept. against him.
Lebowitz got the ruling wrong when she said that it made the president (Trump) a “king” who “can do anything he wants.” In response to this idea, she made an argument that seemed like she was very serious: Biden should now get rid of the Court.
The Supreme Court said that protection only covers “actions within his preclusive constitutional power.”
Maher didn’t have a long conversation with Lebowitz about her point of view, but it was clear that he thought it was crazy. He responded, “Oh, come on.”
Lebowitz also said that people from Tennessee and Arizona were not smart. He even made a joke that the US should give Arizona to Vladimir Putin in return for keeping Ukraine safe.
