Democrats Eye Newsom: Bold Move for 2028?

California Governor Gavin Newsom is getting more attention from Democrats across the country. Even though the next presidential election is still three years away, many Democratic leaders, donors, and voters are already talking about him. Some even think he could be the party’s top choice for president in 2028.

Newsom has become popular not just for what he says, but for how he says it. He often uses bold language online, similar to how President Trump does. For example, a message from his press office recently used harsh words to attack political opponents, copying Trump’s tone. This has caught the eye of Democrats who want a strong fighter to take on Republicans.

Democratic strategists say people are talking about Newsom more than anyone else. But they’re not asking about his policies. Instead, they are asking if he can win. This shows that many Democrats are focused more on winning than on what a candidate believes or plans to do.

Some in the party think it’s time for a more traditional choice. They believe Newsom fits that role. He has been a governor of a large, diverse state and has experience dealing with big issues like immigration, climate change, and redistricting. He also has a history of supporting liberal causes, like gay marriage, which may help him in a Democratic primary.

While Newsom is getting praise now, not everyone is convinced he’s the answer. In California, he has faced criticism over homelessness, crime, and wildfire management. For a time earlier this year, his approval rating was low. But it has improved since then, jumping from 38 percent in June to 56 percent a month later.

Nationally, he is leading in early polls for the 2028 Democratic nomination. An Emerson poll from last month showed Newsom with 25 percent support among likely Democratic voters, ahead of others like Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg.

Some Democrats see Newsom as the only one stepping up to challenge Trump and the Republican Party. One strategist said Newsom is giving Trump “a taste of his own medicine” with his sharp messages online. Others say he’s showing courage and charisma, which are qualities voters like.

Still, there are concerns. Being popular now doesn’t guarantee long-term success. One Republican strategist, who doesn’t support Trump, said Newsom’s bold style may not be enough to carry him through a full campaign. She said his current attention just gives him “goodwill for today.”

Newsom’s rise also shows a bigger problem for Democrats. The party doesn’t have a clear leader right now. With President Trump back in office and leading Republicans, Democrats are looking for someone to take charge. Many feel Newsom is filling that role, at least for now.

But there’s still time for other Democrats to step forward before 2028. As one strategist said, Newsom may be the “lead car” in the race, but there’s room for others to catch up.

The growing attention on Newsom raises questions about where the Democratic Party is heading. If the focus stays on personality over policy, it could shape how Democrats pick their next nominee. It also shows how important media and social media have become in politics. A strong online presence can now boost a candidate’s image just as much as their record in office.

For now, Newsom is enjoying the spotlight. But whether he can turn that into a serious run for president will depend on how he handles the challenges ahead, both in California and on the national stage.
