Bondi Warns Sanctuary Cities: Change or Face Lawsuits

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is taking a strong stand against sanctuary cities. These are places where local leaders limit cooperation with federal immigration officers. Bondi says these policies are unsafe and illegal. She is now warning more than 30 jurisdictions to change their ways or face legal action from the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Bondi made this announcement during a trip to Greenville, South Carolina. She was there to speak with state officials, members of Congress, and local police. South Carolina is not a sanctuary state. Bondi used it as an example of how states can work well with federal immigration officers.

Bondi said she sent letters to 32 governors and mayors. The message was clear: follow federal immigration law or be taken to court. These letters give each place one week to respond. If they refuse to cooperate, the DOJ may file lawsuits or take other steps to force them to comply.

This move supports President Trump’s push to end sanctuary policies. Under his leadership, the federal government is focusing on making sure local and state leaders help carry out immigration laws. Bondi said these sanctuary policies put Americans at risk and help people who are in the country illegally stay here without fear of being deported.

Bondi pointed to the case of Laken Riley, a young woman killed in Georgia. The man charged with her murder had been arrested in New York City but was released under that state’s sanctuary rules. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said that case shows why sanctuary policies in one state can affect safety in others. He said all states must work together to keep people safe.

Bondi also criticized New York City’s leadership. She said the city’s failure to support police officers and cooperate with immigration enforcement has made the job of law enforcement more dangerous. She said police officers risk their lives every day and need strong support from their leaders. Bondi made it clear: local law enforcement should not be told to ignore federal immigration laws.

One of the letters Bondi sent was addressed to California Governor Gavin Newsom. In it, she warned that state officials who interfere with federal immigration enforcement could face criminal charges. She also said helping someone stay in the U.S. illegally could be considered a crime under federal law.

Many of the places Bondi contacted are in blue states—states that often vote for Democrats. These include California, New York, Illinois, Colorado, and others. These states have passed laws that limit how much local police can work with federal immigration agents. Some of these laws have already been challenged in court.

In Illinois, the DOJ filed a lawsuit to stop the state’s sanctuary policies. But a judge dismissed it, saying Illinois has the right under the Constitution to decide how its police departments work with the federal government. The judge said the DOJ went too far and stepped on the state’s rights. The DOJ may appeal the decision or change the lawsuit.

This case highlights a bigger issue: how much power the federal government has over states and cities. States have the right to govern themselves in many areas, including law enforcement. But federal laws are supposed to be followed nationwide. When states or cities choose not to help enforce federal laws, it can lead to conflict.

Bondi’s message is that safety and national security require everyone to work together. But many state leaders argue that they have the right to make their own decisions, especially when they believe federal policies are unfair or harmful.

The debate over sanctuary policies is not new, but it is heating up under the Trump administration. With the DOJ now taking a more aggressive approach, the outcome of these legal battles could shape how much control Washington has over local law enforcement in the future. This is not just about immigration—it is about the balance between federal authority and states’ rights.
