Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were reportedly served subpoenas on Wednesday by Jack Smith Special Counsel, who is overseeing the investigation of former President Trump.
Smith was chosen by AG Merrick Garland in Nov. to decide if Trump should be charged with a crime for what happened on January 6 or how he handled White House records after he had left office.
According to the NY Times, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner are required to appear before a grand jury in order to discuss Trump’s attempts to rescind the results of the 2020 election and his involvement in the disturbances on January 6 at the Capitol.
Throughout Trump’s four years in power, his son-in-law and eldest daughter both had important positions in the White House.
Ivanka Trump, however, declared shortly after her father’s third presidential effort was launched that she would not assist his 2024 campaign.
Ivanka Trump and Kushner both gave testimony before the House Jan. 6 Committee led by Dems. and shared their recollections of that day.
According to the NY Times:
“Ms. Trump went with her father to his supporters’ gathering at the Ellipse close to the White House. From there, hundreds of his fans marched to the Capitol, as they began storm the structure while others chanted “Hang Mike Pence!” in protest of the vice president’s reluctance to carry out Mr. Trump’s wishes.”
“That day, Mr. Kushner made his way back from the Middle East, arriving at the White House only after the pro-Trump crowd had already been rioting for several hours. He along with his wife worked to persuade Mr. Trump to order the rioters to leave and then to pledge to hand over authority to Mr. Biden in a peaceful manner.”
The news of Smith’s most recent subpoena comes only two weeks after it was disclosed that he had subpoenaed former VP Mike Pence, who is anticipated to challenge the subpoena issued by the special counsel.
As reported, Smith has had a history of unsuccessful prosecutions of political figures, that includes a conviction against Bob McDonald (R), a former VA governor, that was ultimately overturned by the United States Supreme Court.
Last month, Trump attacked Smith and referred to him as a “Trump Hating THUG.”
Trump penned:
“Jack Smith, the Special “Prosecutor” in charge of the “get Trump case,” is indeed a Trump-Hating Thug and has a wife that has been a frequent and outspoken Trump hater, and his friends as well as other members of his family are even far worse, and who, according to Ric Grenell, once prosecuted a high-ranking official in Europe who supported Trump and sentenced him to prison.”
