While the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots were going on, Gwen Walz, the wife of Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, said she left her windows open to “smell the burning tires.” She did this because she thought it was an important time.
A video conversation with Gwen Walz talking about the 2020 riots and how she felt about them showed up online again on Tuesday after Vice President Kamala Harris said she would run against Walz for president in 2024. In the interview, which ran on KSTP-TV’s channel, Gwen talked about the BLM riots and why she chose to “leave the windows open as long” as the rioters and thieves burned down the city.
“I could smell the tires on fire.” It was real, and Gwen Walz said, “I kept the windows open as long as I could because I thought that was such a key to what was going on.”
When George Floyd died in 2020, attackers swarmed Minneapolis very quickly. The violence continued for three days, burning down numerous buildings and robbing businesses.
Republicans in Congress and online quickly pointed out that Walz did not immediately send the National Guard to Minneapolis to stop the violence that was occurring at the time. Fox News reports that Walz had earlier said that calling in the National Guard would only make things worse because he thought protesters needed a place to voice their anger.
When asked about the logical case for having armed people on the scene of a police killing, Walz said at the time, “I want to just be clear.”
The Daily Caller News Foundation asked Walz’s office and the Harris campaign for comment, but neither responded right away.
